Moving to Norfolk???

womanwholivedinashoe · 28/04/2011 20:47

hello Ladies,

My husband was recently made redundant and we saw this as the ideal opportunity to search for the lifestyle that we've always wanted. We are seriously looking into Norfolk and I have 4 boys 19 (& Autistic), 14, 8 and baby 6 months and need to know where might be best to bring up kids.
I'm a nurse so will be looking for work and hubby said he would do almost (lol) anything for work. We would prefer to live out of a large town, we like the seaside but not a large beach area more quieter resorts. But in the same respect love the countryside too, so generally just a nice area but facilities within a drive for the kids to not get too bored?
Can anyone help??? We are so far considering Acle and Loddon? Shouldham and Marham although they are quite far from the secondary school is there a school bus service that operates?

Many thanks wwlias

In laws live in Norfolk, lovely area. Someone earlier said "old fashioned", and I think this is a very polite way of saying it. My experience is that some people are not particularly open minded in Norfolk. I'm certainly not saying all people, and don't want to offend. People are openly prejudice, the only way I can think of putting it is that they are a bit sheltered. So it depends where you live now. If you live in a multicultural city, where anything goes, it might be a bit of a culture shock moving to Norfolk.

RainbowShite · 06/05/2011 17:52

There's a big difference between Norwich and the rest of Norfolk.

swingingcat · 06/05/2011 23:21

Oh gosh this thread makes me want to move back "home". I was born and bred in Norwich, Larkman girl and went to the local comp' Bowthorpe. I moved away about 20 odd years ago, married a man in HM Forces. My plan is to move back "home" in 2015 when husband becomes a civilian.
My siblings live in Horsford, Hellesdon, Heartsease and Dereham and my parents are in Norwich, Golden triangle.
I'm looking at Old Costessey or Acle for my home, far enough from family but close enough in an emergency!

Good luck OP in your quest for a home.

SamMarie · 07/05/2011 11:37

Sorry, meant to say aren't openly prejudiced, not are.

It has been real fun and games up here lately.
Ah the joys of Norfolk ......

throckenholt · 09/05/2011 12:50

to be fair that is hardly a daily occurrence - or even a yearly one.

PiousPrat · 09/05/2011 14:47

To be fair, the usual type of crime in Norfolk veers more towards this

RainbowShite · 09/05/2011 18:36

Lubberlich, the crime stats don't agree with you.

womanwholivedinashoe · 09/05/2011 22:31

PiousPrat loved it lol!!!! I think Lubberlich once you don't like an area thats it and everything becomes so much larger but on reading that report it was good to know the Norfolk constabulary are capable of dealing with said situation without anyone getting hurt.
Back in Norfolk tomorrow viewing a property in Long Stratton???
Thanks ladies, your comments make me want to live here even more lol!!!

Grin Pious Prat, so true

I had a lawnmower nicked from my barn when we were on holiday. To be fair we leave the barn doors open and it is directly visible from the lane. The culprit made his escape on foot but couldn't be arsed to push the lawnmower more than 500 yards and was apprended on returning to the caravan site he was staying at in the village. I still don't lock up my sheds etc Shock

DHs friend lives in Swaffham and recently was broken into. New car stereo phones, keys for two cars etc were taken (though not the cars?) this was about a month ago. Yesterday I heard they had caught two lads. I was impressed. When I ws in Peterborough/Herts I'm not suire the police would have even bothered trying to find them

womanwholivedinashoe · 17/05/2011 22:21

Ladies deposit is down on a house in Long Stratton and all things going to plan will be in by the summer, yay :) :) :). Thanks for all your help in this process xxxx

bruffin · 18/05/2011 08:44

"When I ws in Peterborough/Herts I'm not suire the police would have even bothered trying to find them"

I live in Herts and the police have been very serious about catching DS's muggers. It has taken over a year but it is going to court in June.

My Mum and sister have both moved to Thetford in the last couple of years. There is a lot they like, however my mum is a pensioner and finds the lack of public transport a bit of a shock.

My sister is still having to commute to south london because she finds it impossible to find a job she can make a living wage on.

bronze · 18/05/2011 09:17

They didn't even attempt to find my mums mugger (Herts) and told her that had no hope of catching anyone so they would just mark it on file.

My dh has just lost his job for a 3rd time so I would agree, in certain fields there aren't many jobs. there is employment though

swATI06 · 17/06/2015 15:10

Hi there
I will need some advice where to buy house in norwich?????
we are moving to norwich because my husband got the job in norfolk and norwich university hospital. We have 7 week old baby and looking for buying a house in area which have nice and friendly nursery , good private primary and secondary school. Can someone please suggest the area which is the best area to raise a child in norwich and near hospital????

ImprobableBee · 17/06/2015 15:46

sw, luckily for you, the nicest place in Norwich is precisely where the hospital is. Cringleford is really lovely. Mostly doctors and their families around this area, of course! I wouldn't recommend many other areas of Norwich, though. I have lived in the city for a few years and have found it very insular.

trulyscrumptious33 · 17/06/2015 15:48

Somerleyton is gorgeous!!!

Otherwise I would recommend somewhere around Wroxham.

diamonddealer · 17/06/2015 15:56

I would recommend Taverham (said to be the 4th best postcode to live in in England according the beeb!), we have superb schools both primary and secondary and there is a private school if you prefer. I moved to Norfolk about 5 years ago and I really love it, it IS old fashioned and quiet but bringing up a child here is lovely and having the seaside only a 40 minute drive is great.

RedBlu · 17/06/2015 16:16

Avoid Costessey, Bowthorpe, Larkman or Mile Cross. All within good distance of the N&N but are AWFUL places to live.

I recently escaped Costessey after just three years, absolutely hated it there. Huge problems with anti-social behaviour and the traffic on the nearby Dereham Road (which goes out onto the bypass one way and into the city the other way) is famous for how awful it is at all times of day!

I now live just outside Wroxham and its lovely!

ProfYaffle · 17/06/2015 16:22

I live in Norfolk but not Norwich, however all our friends who do live there seem to be desperate to get to Taverham! Must be something good about it Confused Grin

womanwholivedinashoe · 02/07/2015 09:25

I'm back!! After living very briefly in Long Stratton missing family and friends became too much for me and I sadly moved back to London. That was back in 2012 now after realising that I made the biggest mistake in history I am now desperate to move back to Norfolk & I just wanted to say to anyone that is considering the big move you WILL hit a massive brick wall and question why you moved yourself and family away BUT please press forward it can be scaled over and then you'll appreciate all you have. My scenario is different now I lost my baby which was my last piece of news on this forum & my eldest lives in his own flat now & my 18 ds will be going to uni next sept. So its me dh, ds 12 & ds4 & no need for airports or hospitals (I had to leave nursing as was diagnosed with fibromyalgia & couldn't continue working 13hr shifts on cancer ward :( ) We now both run our own successful businesses (internet based) so moving not a problem (BUT fast broadband is lol) as to area now. I have just reread every message & just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone that helped with my last move. Now moving back again older & wiser this time, 4 areas of choice Harleston, Diss, Loddon & Long Stratton :D :D here. Love to all :) xx

I don't like Taverham at all. I prefer to be right in the city or way out and I really dislike the feel of the suburbs around Norwich.
