Who can i ring to get my parents neighbours to move their shitty caravan?

Not really an AIBU but traffic is high here so...

My folks have been trying to sell their house for 18 months, the next door neighbours have a dirty old caravan parked in their garden, nearly every viewing they have had has told the estate agents that the house is lovely but they are put off by the state of the neighbours front garden/caravan (it really is bad and can be seen on google maps)

is there something legally my dad can do to get them to shift it?

It looks as if it needs a clean, but that´s it.

And it sounds as if it´s not just the caravan, but the neighbours garden also.

Is there any health risks such as rats?

IloveJudgeJudy · 28/04/2011 12:06

I agree it doesn't look great, but it doesn't look that bad. I would also suggest that your parents ask if they can buy a caravan cover for it. But I really think your parents don't have a legal leg to stand on. I think the people viewing are just giving excuses.

MarisCrane · 28/04/2011 12:06

Environmental health could only help if it is harbouring pests such as rats or mice.

MaryBS · 28/04/2011 12:06

Do they use it at all? Perhaps offer to pay for it to be stored elsewhere, at least until sold?

I remember asking the neighbours kids to go play football elsewhere when we had a viewing, our house backed onto garages and they were regularly there, not causing any trouble, but the banging against the garages was offputting...

FabbyChic · 28/04/2011 12:07

Is there any way possible that on viewing days the caravan can be moved?

FabbyChic · 28/04/2011 12:08

It wouldn't put me off buying somewhere, it is just dirty.

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns · 28/04/2011 12:10

i have a feeling its being used as a lousy excuse, our private rent was up for sale and apparently people kept saying no as ds room was lime green and blue... because apparently they cant paint a house when the buy it Confused

VinegarTits · 28/04/2011 12:11

my parents house is beautiful inside and out, has 3 beds and a self contained flat with an extra double bedroom, its now on the market for 130k (where else can you get a 4 bed for that!?) people are not making excuse because of the house, if they didnt like the house they would just say, they have told the estate agents the neighbours have put them off, and not just one, but most of the viewings have said the same

thanks for your answers but nothing helpful so far so will try else where Smile

its been there for 10 years and never been used, neighbours are scuffy bastards, and i wouldnt buy a house next to it so i cant blame others, but hey ho, some people have lower standards than me

freecycle? Grin

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns · 28/04/2011 12:18

where abouts is the house, my ils have caravans and pay around £30pcm for storage, or could you not ask them to pop it elsewhere for a week, pack a load of veiwings in and then let it come back and tell prospective buyers neighbours are looking after it for a friend for a few weeks or set fire to it Grin

Grumpla · 28/04/2011 12:18

Bribe them. Simple. £500 cash to move it until after completion. £250 and a signed contract now, £250 the day your parent's hand over the house to the new owners.

toddlerama · 28/04/2011 12:18

Arson?

bubblecoral · 28/04/2011 12:18

Is your parents house on rightmove or something simelar that you could link to? I'm nosey and I want to see now! Grin

It's a shame but it doesn't sound like there is much you could do legally to get the caravan moved. I would have thought the estate agents would have suggested it otherwise.

FabbyChic · 28/04/2011 12:20

To be fair I would not move next to a house with scruffy windows, net curtains, a dirty or damaged front door.

I think this is more to do with the neighbours themselves than it is the caravan.

sb6699 · 28/04/2011 12:20

I dont really think there is anything you can do tbh.

My LL has made a makeshift driveway on the front garden and has left his manky old caravan in there. Its far worse than the one on your pic, dirty, mouldy and falling apart, and the neighbours are up in arms but despite their efforts with council, etc, nothing has been done about it.

I even raised it with the Letting Agent, but as the house was marketed to us "as not having a driveway", they say they cant do anything either.

Tangle · 28/04/2011 12:22

If they never use it could your parents offer to buy it? An offer of cash might focus their minds on how little they've used it over the last decade - and if it gets their house sold then it would be money well spent.

worraliberty · 28/04/2011 12:26

If they've had to drop the house by 25k and can't even get people to rent it, I'd say it's nothing to do with the caravan really.

LaWeasel · 28/04/2011 12:28

Anyway they could block the view?

A load of lylandi or trellis or something?
