to not want to buy from John Lewis ever again

I bought a dishwasher from John Lewis 2 weeks ago. It was supposed to be (finally) delivered yesterday. We bought it cos it had an extended 5 year warranty, but then yesterday got letter through saying we had a 2 year warranty and could only have the 5 year for an extra £80.

So we told them to hold the delivery while we sorted it with CS. The driver cancelled our delivery and told us we'd have to rearrange even though the warranty issue was sorted out at about 11.30 and our slot was till 2. I can appreciate they may have been busy, this is not the main issue.

Fair enough. But I was then only offered a slot next week. I asked if they could do anything as warranty issue was their fault and was promised a call back today. It never came.

I've spent all day on the phone to them to sort the mess out.

We were offered a courier to deliver, but had paid them to fit it so refused.

CS have been confused and would not let us speak to the store manager from the store where we bought it.

Tonight a driver turned up with our dishwasher. Imagine our delight that they sorted it out... However, there was no packaging on the machine and when I queried it the drivers claimed they'd 'removed it in the van'. The machine was really dusty. When they left (I felt sorry for the drivers as they'd worked late) we looked inside and realised it was A USED MACHINE. It is soaking wet inside, there is water in the salt compartment and white salt marks, and the machine has water marks down it. It has not been turned on or tested so there is no way it has happened here. I showed a neighbour who has just had a kitchen fitted and she has agreed that it is clearly a used machine. I am absolutely livid and completely gobsmacked that JL think it is OK to palm customers off like this, especially as we have paid over £400.

Oh good luck to you, I am really surprised by this.

Will be watching with interest for the resolution.

YANBU! I'd be absolutely fuming. I think you should contact trading standards.

I had a very bad JL experience a few years back with some carpet runners I had ordered. When they arrived the ends had not been sewn so they were ragged at the end, just as if someone had sliced them with a stanley knofe. I rang up and gave them hell - I demanded they be taken away, redone and then couriered over to my house. To their credit they did this and I have found them pretty good ever since.

I agree you should FB or twitter your experience OP - they watch these networks like hawks.

JL have just called me. DW is being picked up and a refund arranged. We will be taking our custom elsewhere.

did they offer you any compensation at all, OP?

titchy · 28/04/2011 10:09

I read that as 'Dear Wife' is being picked up and a refund arranged.

I'll get my coat...

electra · 28/04/2011 10:11

I don't blame you at all. I can't believe they would do something like that and then lie about it tbh.

johnlewistraumas · 28/04/2011 10:18

titchy - that made me lol.

electra - I'm wouldn't say they are lying but they've certainly not excelled themselves!

donnie - no mention of anything else

that is awful. I think you should twitter this thread!

Did you check in the van? I had a washing machine delivered recently (insurance replacement so no choice on where it was from). The delivery was from Comets and appeared with no packaging. I went out to the van to check!

I would never normally buy anything from Comet but I was amazed at how efficient they were. They delivered when they said they would. Took the old machine away and plumbed in the new one. This involved removing and replacing the utility room door and cutting a hole in a cupboard for the larger hose and fittings. Neither of which they had been expecting to do. Both the delivery men were really nice too.

Not sure about JL anymore. They collected an armchair from me for repair 6.5 weeks ago saying it would be returned in 2 weeks and I'm still waiting for it to be returned. They've been useless at keeping me informed of progress.

update: JL have sorted refund and given us compensation. So at least they have redeemed themselves somewhat by sorting out the uplift and refund quickly. I'm satisfied on that count, but can't say I'd be keen to repeat the experience by ordering from them again as the time and stress of trying to sort this out has put me right off.

update #2 a different set of delivery drivers have picked it up. They were lovely. They confirmed that the way it was packaged was not how a new machine should arrive apparently even if the outer layers were removed in the van, the door should've been taped shut and the interior should have had lots of packaging in it and defo not been wet/had salt residue in it. So it seems my suspicions were right Shock

I've had never had anything but excellent service from JL. I'm sure if you complain they will take it very seriously.

I bought some towels from them (online) and one started to fray and go into pieces after three months as the seam had all unravelled. I wrote them an e-mail saying I was very disappointed with the towel and it didn't come up to their usual standards, and could I get a replacement. Got an e-mail back within 24 hours, profusely apologising and saying could I ring them and it would be sorted out. I did call and they immediately sent a replacement which arrived within a couple of days- I didn't need to return the old one or anything, they just took my word for it.

John Lewis really are not as good as they think they are.

Had a lampshade that fell to pieces when we put it up. We took it back and explained what had happened to the man in the lighting department. He didnt say a single word to us as he took the lampshade and refunded my card. NOT A SINGLE WORD.

In the curtain department we encountered the most stuck up sales person I had ever met who rolled his eyes and huffed puffed and sighed his way through the conversation as I asked him about shutters. I left sharpish.
We ordered a TV set it had a very bad picture and the trouble we had getting a refund! Dear me, it was terrible.

But I did get refunds.
