Was i just being Grumpy ?

The boy next door (10) has been climbing over the joint Garden wall and into my Alleyway at the side of my house ( i don't mind this part). My side gate is Kept closed AT ALL TIMES to keep my 12 month old Dog inside . This morning i caught him opening my side gate & come into my back garden to call for my ds even though he knows my DS has chicken pox atm & can not go out to play.

I told him Not to open my side gate as

1. He might let my Dog escape
2. I do not think it is safe for him to be in my back garden as my dog might get territorial ( he barks if he hears anyone even walking near the side gate) and turn on him . My dog is still very young . I was quite firm with the boy (not scary firm) as i explained all this to him but only because i don't want him letting himself in & out of my garden while i am not at home . Off to the DIY store to get a lock for the side gate in the morning . I feel i was firm for the right reasons but i have been stuck indoor for almost 3 weeks with both dc's getting the chicken pox 1 after the other & could be slightly grumpy

No I think that's perfectly fine. I would have left him under no false impressions either.

If it happens again before the lock is in place, tell his parents.

No its only one of those wooden gates with a bolt that keeps it closed , so easily opened .

It's been playing on my mind all day tbh , I've been feeling bad about it .

YANBU and I would have added that it's your garden and he shouldn't come in without permission. He might decide it's ok to be wandering into your house unannounced otherwise.

Dont feel bad about it at all!!! If your dog got out and got hurt, you would never forgive yourself for not doing something about it.

If you hadn't told him, he wouldn't have known that you don't want him to do it.

If you put a lock on your gate though, don't lose your key, stopping you from ever being able to use it again like I have

YANBU :) If you're really worried about it, though, the next time you see him you could just say "I didn't mean to sound grumpy the other day, I just really don't want you or the dog to get hurt."
