to want to move to London next year

Hate living in Gloucestershire. It's bollocks.

I work in Swindon - loads of Londoners commute down here.

DP can work anywhere.

DD has got GCSEs and would need a college place, but she would certainly be up for it (has the wanderlust like me and DP).

GAML are you looking for somewhere with a village-y vibe where you can get into the centre quickly or some where gritty and urban?

Stangirl · 26/04/2011 19:18

I have lived in London 24 years and would live nowhere else. I spent most of that time in Camden and now Brixton. I wold never live beyond zone 2 as you might as well live in Sutton.

We've just moved out of London and I adored it. I wouldn't live there with children without lots o money though. The cheapest 3 bed we could find in our area was £1.5m, weep. I have lived in harlesden too. S*thole. Better than hackney though. If anyone tries to tell you somewhere is up and coming/ bohemian/ artistic (I.e shoreditch) that's code for s*thole.

northernrock · 26/04/2011 19:53

Oh my God! I went to Sushi Say when I was a student! We made a rubbish student film in it! I can't believe its still there!

Yeah Serenity, with you on Hackney. You couldnt pay me to live there. I left London cos I was poor with a baby. It just felt grim. But if you have a bit of cash an' that would be ok in the right area.

My top tips are:

Crouch End(villagey, good for actor spotting)

Whitehall Park (between Crouch end and Archway-conservation area)

Gospel Oak (on the very handy North London line which takes you to Camden one way, Richmond the other. Also near Hampstead Heath)

Greenwich (DLR, park, cute shops, nice houses)

Ealing (genteel, central line)

Queens Park/ Brondesbury-quite suburban feel but near loads of stuff.

Dont go for anywhere too sketchy with a sixteen year old daughter is my advice!

I agree with you Northern and the OP does too, when it comes to the teen. There's no point in going anywhere urban and edgy (read dodgy as hell) if she's too scared to go to the local shop on her own. These places are ok when you are young and enjoying the studenty life but I don't think they are family places. You would have to pay me to live in Hackney or anywhere near Brixton. I wouldn't live in Camden town but anywhere around there would be fine. West Hampstead is also very handy.

WentworthMillerMad · 26/04/2011 20:12

Harlesden! Are you crazy. I lived there for 8 years, on ridley road which is the posh end of harlesden! Rough, minging place.
We moved to Glasgow and it's the best thing we ever did. Funky city, everything we need without the hassle / expense of London.
Willesden green nicer but not cheap, z
As for west hampered you need 700k +

KatieMiddleton · 26/04/2011 20:30

What about Clapham or Blackheath?

northernrock · 26/04/2011 20:36

Both dead expensive Katie.Unfortunately you get the best deals if you live not too near a tube too (see Crouch end)
Also Blackheath full of Tories. (Personal preference not to be surrounded by Tories!)

WhatsWrongWithYou · 26/04/2011 20:37

Not read all of this thread but as a Scouser who lived in London for 10 years and left it for Gloucs 8 years ago, I say do it!!

We're near Stroud, have pretty countryside, shops you can imagine - I suffer go to Cheltenham occasionally but much prefer Cabot in Bristol.

The worst thing is, it was my idea to move, DH was happy with his half hour commute and ease of access to the airports, the DCs were in one of the most sought-after state schools in the country, but I wanted less crowds and more space.

I've come to terms with it now, and actually we have grammar schools here which is great for my three - one reason for moving was the lack of secondary choices (as we saw it) where we were living.

But if I only had one whose secondary education was at its later stage, I'd certainly consider moving back. We were ''twixt the Commons' in Battersea and later overlooking Wandsworth Common (sigh).

DH sometimes talks about a holiday cottage - but why would you go on holiday to the country when you live there? I'm plotting a houseboat in Chelsea!

Anyway, this one would do you nicely!

QuintessentialPains · 26/04/2011 20:45

kungfu that is where I used to live!!! Love Thai Square for a nice meal....

Ladywellian, that is as expensive as East Sheen!! And "only" 3 beds.....

I ask the earth.....

animula · 26/04/2011 20:53

All you Hackney haters, "scuzzy" Hackney

mosschops30 · 26/04/2011 20:57

Just marking my place enjoying this thread, me and dd love london, she wants to go to uni there. Dh would never live there.
Some lovely houses being posted so just being nosey Smile

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/04/2011 21:04

Arf at the "period villa" in your link Animula. Honest description is "Victorian terrace" but its funny to see what Estate Agents think they can get away with.

Tenthousandmen · 26/04/2011 21:05

I'm another mum living in the borough of Hackney, but very close to Islington. I agree with the other poster who said that most other parts of Hackney/East London were areas to avoid - it feels too remote to me as they're not on the tube and it takes a lot longer to get into central London on the buses.

I've always lived within a few minutes' walk of a zone 1 tube station and that means that I can get to the most interesting places in less than 45 minutes. I find that the further you live from the centre, the more your life revolves around local facilities and many of my friends in zone 2/3 rarely go into central London. I don't really see the point in paying London prices for housing if you're not going to make the most of the brilliant opportunities/shows here.

I would have disliked somewhere suburban-ish like Belsize Park as a teen personally, though it's probably a bit safer, just far less interesting.

KatieMiddleton · 26/04/2011 21:09

Ah Northern I live in Richmond so have a warped perspective of expensive Grin there are bits of Clapham and Blackheath that seem cheap by comparison. Have found my money goes further in Kingston but that is not London. There are some nice places on outskirts of Wimbledon too.

I do live in a rabbit hutch very small house.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 26/04/2011 21:11

Tenthousand, you make anywhere outside of Zone 1 sound like a wasteland. Smile I'm in Zone 2 (in Hackney, which I adore) and I get the best of both worlds; my neighborhood is, well, neighborhoody, with lovely local shops, caffs, parks and a community feel, but I can also get into 'town' e.g. major galleries, cinemas, theatres etc in under an hour. I'm not near a tube either, but travel very successfully on a combination of trains, buses and tubes.

I can't speak for Zone 3 though. There be dragons, I reckon Smile

Francagoestohollywood · 26/04/2011 21:14

YANBU, I'd move to London tomorrow, if we could.

KatieMiddleton · 26/04/2011 21:15

20 mins to South Bank for me and I am in zone 4!

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 26/04/2011 21:16

Katie, I stand corrected. Smile

northernrock · 26/04/2011 21:28

Ha ha ha!! A million and a quarter quid for a terrace in Hackney!! For that money I'd want a footballers style mansion with 2 acres and bleddy ponies! (Not in Hackney though...)
Who ARE these people that have a million quid to buy house anyway?? kicks self for not having proper job such as investment banker

northernrock · 26/04/2011 21:29

Oooh funny boldy type (mistake!)

MissBetsyTrotwood · 26/04/2011 21:32

Well good evening. We're out near the Marshes (back garden pretty well on them) and we love it. The schools are getting better all the time and there's a real community. My DSs are known by name and fussed over in the local shops and we don't leave the house for seeing friends and neighbours. I don't want to move for a long old time!

The traffic's awful though.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 26/04/2011 21:35

Oh, I meant the Hackney Marshes. Oops!
