to think that Thatcher and Major should not have been invited to the royal wedding....

...if they weren't also going to invite Blair and Brown? Surely it should be all former PMs or none?

Yes, it's their wedding, and of course, there's an argument that they should be able to invite whoever they like. But in my view, if they choose to accept the trappings of royalty, along with the wealth and status that royalty confers, then they need to accept that this is not "just" their wedding, it is a state occasion.

Personally, I don't think they should be allowed to make such blatant political statements, and I'm amazed that this has been allowed to happen! AIBU?

i think if Tiggy (former nanny) is going then i (former class assistant at music club) should be going too!!!! Grin

ilovesprouts · 24/04/2011 11:57

yabu who cares i heard on the radio that they not garters of the relm or somthing like that

jojowest · 24/04/2011 11:57

maybe they llike thatcher and major

chubsasaurus · 24/04/2011 11:59

Blair didn't get on with them so well, Thatcher and Major are Knights of the Garter who are all invited. Who would want Brown to glower through their wedding?

magicmummy1 · 24/04/2011 11:59

What the heck is a garter of the realm?

I don't give a toss who goes to the wedding, but I do give a toss that our supposedly non-partisan future head of state appears to be expressing political preferences!

BendyBob · 24/04/2011 12:00

Are the Blairs not invited? I bet Cheri'll be gutted at that, she like a freebie knees upGrin.

I'm not too bovvered tbh who they invite.

magicmummy1 · 24/04/2011 12:01

Jojo, that's precisely my point. This isn't a private citizen's wedding, so it doesn't (shouldn't) matter who they like.

ilovesprouts · 24/04/2011 12:02

im not botherd full stop

MollieO · 24/04/2011 12:02

Knights of the Garter info here

NinkyNonker · 24/04/2011 12:02

YABU for reasons already stated.

Zippylovesgeorge · 24/04/2011 12:02

Major was appointed as a legal guardian to the Princes when their Mother died - thats another reason for him to be there.

MollieO · 24/04/2011 12:03

I'm more surprised that the Kings of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have been invited bearing in mind what has been going on there recently.

penguin73 · 24/04/2011 12:04

As others have said they have been invited as Members the Order of the Garter, not as political figures. All Members have been invited as William is one.

Zippylovesgeorge · 24/04/2011 12:04

Mollie - I guess the invitations were sent out before all the trouble happened.

EGGceptionalbeEGGleeyes · 24/04/2011 12:04

No, they're supposed to be above politics so should invite across the political spectrum.
If Thatcher and Major are going, so should former labour Prime Ministers.

magicmummy1 · 24/04/2011 12:05

Agree MollieO. Was also quite Hmm when I heard this.

numotre · 24/04/2011 12:06

YABU its their wedding they can invite who they want, would you honestly want Brown at your wedding?

worraliberty · 24/04/2011 12:07

Yes but the really important question is are their children welcome? Grin

magicmummy1 · 24/04/2011 12:07

Didn't know about the orders of the garter thing, but still think it's poor form.

EGG - thank you, glad I'm not the only one!

OP posts:
magicmummy1 · 24/04/2011 12:09

Numotre - I wouldn't want any of them there, but I disagree that this is just "their" wedding.

Grin at worraliberty!

OP posts:
gordyslovesheep · 24/04/2011 12:10

not especially bothered either way but yes - they have been invited due to their title

magicmummy1 · 24/04/2011 12:14

But even if it is because of the title, that's not necessarily how it's getting reported around the world.

Bad enough that we still have a royal family, let alone one that is seen to be politically partisan!

OP posts:
MollieO · 24/04/2011 12:14

Invites were sent a month ago so not before the current troubles there.

HipHopOpotomus · 24/04/2011 12:20

YANBU - I think it's shocking ESP as royal family are supposed to be non-political and go to supposed great lengths to be seen to be so. How this can be seen as anything other than a political statement beggars belief. At best it's extremely naive.

Personally I now feel very "fuck you" about the whole thing now. You can't invite Cxmeron, Major and Thatcher, ignore Brown and Blair and not expect people who voted Labour not to take it as a two finger salute! Someones head should roll!

bemybebe · 24/04/2011 12:22

Though I do not care either way, I am not surprised either. Cherie Blair is a fierce anti-royalist.

Is it normal to invite all former PMs?
