to complain to Boots

Hi everyone (first thread in AIBU so be nice please)

I went into my local Boots today, they have two tills but never seem to use them preferring to use the tills at the pharmacy (small town boots). So I went in there today to ask someone about thrush treatment and because of the till set up (and lack of staff) I had to announce in front of the queue of people that I needed something for thrush.

The staff member politely asked in front of everyone whether I wanted something to use orally or "the other one you can use internally" Blush now give her her due she said it quite quietly but if it was me listening I'd have heard it!

I just wanted to get out as quickly as possible so chose the tablet, when asked if I was taking anything else (whilst flashing the box up and down in front of an evergrowing queue of people) I said the pill, queue the cashier going over to the pharmacist and him going through a huge book to see if it would impact on my pill (a good few minutes looking) and the queue carried on getting longer, "yes it will" she replies, "maybe you should consider the pessary" Blush by which time I said no it's fine I'll just take that one as I just wanted to get out! (The queue was now about 7/8 people).

AIBU to want to complain to boots that if they have tills they should use the to avoid conversations such as this, or should I just get over it and move on!

Given the layout of the store you describe, I think it's unavoidable that your conversation would/could have been overheard. You should have asked if there was somewhere private to speak to the staff/pharmacist before you started. TBF the staff are probably totally unembarrassed by questions abut thrush and didn't think you'd be.

I think you just need to get over it!

ihatecbeebies · 23/04/2011 19:39

As it is a pharmacy I'd have expected some privacy, yanbu, if you complain they might open up the other tills to give customers at the pharmacy a bit more privacy. In my boots they have a separate secluded booth if you have to talk to the pharmacist as well for more discression.

gallicgirl · 23/04/2011 19:40

Boots always have a place where you can speak to the pharmacist in privacy so I think you should perhaps have asked that at the outset.

Perhaps the staff member could have used a little more discretion but I think you'll love and learn.

catsareevil · 23/04/2011 19:43

I think that they would have expected you to ask to move to a more private area. Even if the pharmacy area was only being used for that there still could have been someone in the queue behind you.

firstsupermum · 23/04/2011 19:45

make a complain will not harm you, thats you wright if you fill its not good layout, they just going to check the matter, if they can do something about it, this will be good , if no, at less you make a point, maybe other people are felling the same but they keep quite too.

Marne · 23/04/2011 19:46

I have had that happen to me many times Blush, now i go to my local chemest and wait till there less people at the till, although i'm not really bothered who knows about my thrush as no body knows me anyway Grin.

FriedEggyAndSlippery · 23/04/2011 19:47

Yes you should complain. My DH is a pharmacy manager for a small local Boots. He is very strict that for anything sensitive the staff offer the use of the consultation room.

He would be livid if one of his staff did that!

To be fair YOU could have asked in the first place, they may have a sign to say 'private consultation room available' or similar. But no yanbu they should've offered this to you.

Journey · 23/04/2011 19:48

You should of asked to speak to the pharmacist and then you would have got some privacey.

I can't believe you bought the product knowing that it could impact on the pill your on.

You could complain if you want but I do think you could of been a bit more assertive. "Could I speak to the pharmacist?" or "is there somewhere private I can speak?" is hardly difficult to say.

firstsupermum · 23/04/2011 19:50

i dont like to discuse my private problem next to the people, even if they dont know me, do for it, and make a complain, i am sure thats will give them an idea about how the people feel.

sparkle101 · 23/04/2011 19:53

Am not sure they have a private room. It's a small old style type boots and haven't seen one when I've been in there before.

journey I'll take extra precautions for a good couple of weeks after taking it even though it says 3 days - I was just too scared she would launch into the use of a pessary!!!

YABU just get over it, no one is bothered about your thrush........now if it was genital warts then if I had have been in the q you would have got a snigger Grin

chipmonkey · 23/04/2011 20:03

YANBU. I once quietly asked for Canesten in our local pharmacy only to have the assistant shout over to the pharmacist "John, how much is the Canesten?" really loudly in front of a queue of people.Blush In fairness to the pharmacist, he did give her a look and I'm sure she got a telling off later.

That set up would really put you off if you needed the MAP though Sad

bemybebe · 23/04/2011 20:18

Don't be cross. Smile I would not be embarassed about thrush, but there are probably conditions one would want to keep confidential.

Suggestion, next time write a condition/medicine on a piece a paper. I have seen people doing it before.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 23/04/2011 22:07

Think all small chemists are the same really aren't they, I know our little village Co-Op chemist is. Not entirely sure what they could do tbh.
