i went to wh smiths to day, after my dad who lives at the other end of the country went to his local branch to buy a St Georges day card. He was frowned at and told NO we don't sell them as they represent the BNP ! WEll I promptly went to my local smiths and was told the same thing. AIBU to be bloody cross that now wanting to celebrate the British national saints day put me on a par with the BNP ......has the world gone mad???????

But back to the serious business of having a Bank Holiday for my birthday....

thanks karma, as i said i am in NI and i am unsure of what flags are associated with what and what may be a sensitive connection. you are right, people should be able to celebrate. we had a horrible scenario this year at our st patrick's day parade where a small minority of republicans tried to hijack the parade and use tricolours instead of the traditional st patrick's flag. it put an awful atmosphere about tehe day and several primary schools pulled out of it leaving lots of children devastated as all their work had gone to waste. people just want to be able to take a bit of pride in their heritage without any nasty undercurrent or ulterior motives.

I would be mad at the BNP for hijacking the symbol and and giving it such a horrible association as much as if not more than being upset with WH Smith.

If the only people who use the flag are the BNP and everyone else steers clear because they use it, then it's what the flag will become associated with. By not stocking St George's day cards WH Smiths are helping to create a self fulfilling prophecy.

English people should be able to fly their flag and celebrate their saints day, the same as Wales and Scotland and Ireland without anyone reading anything into it.
