treated like a common thief in high street jewellers.

two weeks ago i put my dh's watch in to be repaired at a well known high street jewellers, the watch had been a gift for his birthday a few months ago and he had managed to break the pin but as i had taken out the extra insurance it was covered under this, the watch had been in twice before to get links taken in/out and both times we had dropped of and picked up no bother and with no id.

i was told the repair could take up to six weeks so was pleased to get a call on wed to say the repair was done and the watch was ready to pick up, we leave to go on holiday on tues so it was perfect timing.

we decided to pick it up on the way to the beach with our 3dc, i left dh in the car with the baby and took the older two dc into the shop with me to collect the watch.

when i went in i gave my name and said i was here to collect the watch, the female assistant asked for my reciept for the repair and i said i did not have it, noone advised me i needed it for collection and this had never been a issue before. she traced me on the computer using my surname and two address (have moved since watch was bought) the day i dropped the watch of my baby was getting really grumpy in her buggy and i could not even remember being given a reciept never mind knowing where it was.

she went through to the back shop and brought the watch through and asked if i had any id on me, i showed my switch card, army dependents photo id and also had my dh's army id on me and said if needed i would send him in so they could identify him, female assistant said she did not think it would be a problem to give me the watch but she had to clear it with her mananger, this meant i had to stand and wait on him finishing with a customer before he came over. once she finally did ask him he said no i was not getting the watch!! it was company policy that i could not get it without the reciept or id with my address on it.

i expalined no-one had told me this either when i dropped the watch of or when i was called to say it was ready (i was standing holding the mobile they called me on) i had never had this issue before with them, we had travelled round on a hot day with three dc and i could descibe the watch/ how much it cost/ what it looked like/ when it was handed in for repair/ what needed done but he said it was written on the reciept that i needed to bring it for collection then walked of to deal with someone else (very poor managment)!

i went out and spoke to dh who then went in and tried expalining once again, he was not happy with the responce he got so got the phone number for the head office to phone up and explain, he sat in the car outside the shop where we had parked when we first pulled up trying to sort it out over the phone while i went of to another shop, when i got back there was a security guard standing outside the shop who had been put there by the manager due to dh sitting outside the store!

after a few calls back and forward the person on the phone said the manager had been advised to give us the watch but as it was his final desicion we were not getting it BUT (heres the best part) they will post it out to us at the new address i gave them even though i changed it without showing any id.

the watch now wont arrive before we leave on holiday and given my past experience with the royal mail we will prob never see it again.

when i got home i managed to find the repair reciept and it says nowhere on it that i need to take it for collection, the whole carry on took so long that we never even got to the beach with the dc.

sorry for the long rant but aibu to think this manager for just being a total jobsworth?

i would have been annoyed at the inconvenience - but i would have gone home and got a letter with my address on it - even if you have moved - well for me anyway - i know i still have stuff with my old addresses on.

so annoyed at the inconvenience yes! not at the protocol and process that would not allow my jewellery to be taken by someone else.

however, i wasn't there to witness the managers attitude - and if his attitude in empoying hte protocol and policy was delivered with utmost shittyness - then i would have been annoyed at his personally

FabbyChic · 22/04/2011 10:39

Id ring them and tell them not to send it you will collect as you have the receipt.

vbn123 · 22/04/2011 11:09

It was to be sent out yesterday afternoon and I did not think about the address confusion until last night so we will just have to wait and see now.

I had a very similar problem with H M Samuels and a pathetic, power crazed prick member of staff.....have never shopped in tete since!!

Its not just jewellers who make things difficult. I moved house, went into the bank the next day to change my address. Had my bank card and photographic ID (passport and driving licence) to prove it was my account. They said they couldn't change my address until I could prove it was my address with utility bills my driving licence with my new address etc. I explained that I had only moved the day before and wad only just going to post off my driving licence so it would be a few weeks before I had that and utility bills. They said for security reasons they would have to continue to send it to my old address. I asked them if I had proven it was my account and he said yes. I then asked if they were confident it was my account and would have given me cash out of it how would it improve security to post my bank details to someone else's house. He was unable to answer that effectively.

The manager sounds more interested in engaging in battles of one-upmanship than with his customers. I sometimes think people like that like to pick on people least likely to be thieves/dishonest, etc because in normal day-to-day life you would be able to tell them to feck off.

A receipt acts as proof of ownership but is not the only proof of ownership. You provided multiple other forms of id, albeit without addresses, plus the mobile phone they had phoned you on. If it doesn't say on the receipt that you had to bring it with you on collection, and if you weren't told this at any time, then IMHO they were in breach of contract.

Mind you, if the watch now goes missing, you do at least have the receipt and can kick up a huge fuss.

loopylou6 · 22/04/2011 12:46

Shock I'd of stayed in the store and called the police.

PinotGrigioBlush · 22/04/2011 13:12

What a twunt.

He clearly has a small penis.

Definitely dont trust RM - call them and advice them to hold it until your return.

Then - when collected - write to Head Office.

Sorry for your recent rough time too.

vbn123 · 22/04/2011 13:30

Thanks everyone!

Loopylou the thought did cross my mind, clearly the watch was my property and he knew this by agreeing to post it out so it did feel like theft to me.

The whole situation was so petty though that it would have been such a waste of police time.

Why did you ruin your family day for this and didn't just go and get the receipt another time? He may have been a jobsworth, but you ruined your family day out turning this into something it wasn't. I wish my life has such trivial worries!

vbn123 · 22/04/2011 19:21

If you bothered to read my op properly you would have noticed I said that I was not even sure I had/was given a reciept for the repair. It was only once I hunted at home I found it.

Also it was not a family "day" out, we were planning on taking dh go the beach while we were round that side of town.

The watch is Of reasonable value and I wanted to get the matter resolved.

If you are going to insult me at least read my post properly first.

Also don't think you know anything of the problems I have in my life based on one post you have not even read right!!!

Turn up to DFs shop without your reciept and you will be told to f-off and come back with 3 proofs of ID, one being a photo ID the others being address proof such as bills.

LDNmummy · 22/04/2011 20:36

DP and I were going to buy something reasonably expensive from them but were undecided as unsure of follow up service. Now I will not bother.

Go back with the reciept and complain to him in person, highlighting the fact that there is no indication on it that you have to bring it in with you when collecting.

Then photocopy it and send it to head office highlighting the lack of notification and the experience you have had.

vbn123 · 22/04/2011 20:38

Told to f off Hmm

Classy!

OP posts:
vbn123 · 22/04/2011 20:40

Thanks LDN, I think that's what we will be doing.

The assistant in the shop had even recognised dh from a previous visit to sort links.

Had the rules been consistent none of this would have happened.

Ha.. I think the Manager must have moved from the Store in my town! I was given a necklace from my hubby for Christmas. Within 2 weeks the thing had snapped in three places like spaghetti. I took it back with the receipt and explained to the lady in the store that I wanted to exchange it for another necklace to the same value. She went to see the store manager who kept looking at me and then looking at the necklace. When he eventually came over to me he asked what happened. I explained it just snapped as the gold was very soft. He hummed and haa'd for ages then told me that it was a delicate necklace and these things happen and I should have been more careful. I told him that I didnt care how fooking delicate it was I expected a necklace of that price to last more than 2 bloody weeks! He eventually decided "on this occasion" he would let me exchange it. Jumped up little tosser!

OldMumsy · 22/04/2011 22:49

Which jewellers was this so I can avoid in the future?

bleedingstill · 22/04/2011 22:53

The world has gone mad

eversoslightlytired · 22/04/2011 22:55

vbn123 · 23/04/2011 10:00

I'm actually confusing myself now is it hm Samuels or just h Samuels? Either way I won't be back again!

OP posts:
eversoslightlytired · 23/04/2011 17:48
