To think there's something in my attic?

DH has complained of being woken at night by noises up there...this house was only buit in the early 90s....not old at all. He has said it for months now...and I have not ben bothered until last night.

Something kept waking me up...but I couldn't put my finger on what...but you know when you KNOW its a noise that's disturbed you?

Then I dreamed there was something in the attic...well someone actually...but obviously there isn't anyone...it was as though the noises got into my dreams!

DH had a look up there a month ago and saw nothing...but t be fair we're not sure what we should look for....what evidence do animals or birds leave? Holes? Poo?

not much evidence sometimes if mice - was it a scratching and running sound if so - prob mice .

marmaladetwatkins · 21/04/2011 18:01

It's only the Judderman.

Salmotrutta · 21/04/2011 18:02

Bats?
They leave piles of smelly muck though so you'd know. And you aren't allowed to get rid of them.
Could be mice - there would maybe be signs of things being chewed?

Could you have birds nesting in the eaves - we get this sometimes and it sounds like attic noises depending on where they are?

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 21/04/2011 18:04

wtf is the judderman? Grin
DH says he has seen small things flying at night or early in the morning as he comes in from night shifts...so culd well be bats!

DH is Aussie and not that familiar with our wildlife...

ZillahWhoDrankTooMuchGin · 21/04/2011 18:04

If its a faint hissing / scratching sound it could be a wasps nest.

missismonky · 21/04/2011 18:07

Oh my god, the Judderman! I hate you marmaladewatkins.

magicmummy1 · 21/04/2011 18:09

We used to have bats. Didn't bother me till they started coming into the house itself....

ZillahWhoDrankTooMuchGin · 21/04/2011 18:10

Now would be a good time to make up and entirely new flying British creature to fool your Dh with ....

Dusk-dogs, Flitter-voles or felves anyone?

Salmotrutta · 21/04/2011 18:12

Sounds possible- you could go out at dusk and do a bit of bat spotting!

They will leave droppings in your attic so the evidence will be there somewhere if it's bats. If they are small (as in tiny) it might be Pipstrelles.

You could ask the council(?) to come and check maybe?

Without wishing to alarm you, if it is bats, leave well alone as some carry rabies. I don't want to be a prophet of doom, honestly, but sometimes people don't realise this.

aftereight · 21/04/2011 18:12

A squirrel ? We had one once.

valiumredhead · 21/04/2011 18:15

Mice are noisy little beggers and you won't always see evidence of them - put down poison and I bet the noise disappears in a week Grin

A squirrel you WILL hear noisy fuckers bounding around like an escaped rhino from the zoo!

Also it could be birds nesting - it's that time of year.

ZillahWhoDrankTooMuchGin · 21/04/2011 18:17

Felves don't smell and aren't aggressive but their shits are enormous....

Numberfour · 21/04/2011 18:19

Could be a ghost?

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 21/04/2011 18:23

Dusk you say salmotrutta? Will do! I will also report back...in the mantime am off to convince DH it's possibly a Felve in honour of Zillah who invented them....

Felves are small stoat-like creatures who inhabit suburban outbuilding and lofts; with a long bushy tail and snake-like body, they are sandy brown in colour and extremely agressive. If you suspect that you have an infestation of Felves it is imperative that you avoid the house entirely for at least a week as the house will require profesional extermintors to clear both the Felves and their extremely toxic droppings.

Grin Zillah....ours are very agressive!

Well I was going to suggest squirrels but it could of course be Kosovans Grin

We have bats, just means we can't use that loft, I love watching them come out into the garden at dusk. Have never heard any noises from them.

We also have quite a few birds, which we do hear, but not through the night, just at dawn.

twirlymum · 21/04/2011 18:30

I used to work in an old building years ago.
Strange things kept disappearing, like half a jar of marmite, and a washing up bowl. It went on for months. Lots of people suggested it was a poltergeist (sceptic here)
After some investigating, we discovered someone was living in the roof space.

ZillahWhoDrankTooMuchGin · 21/04/2011 18:30

Don't forget that they fly very fast too. You must have the more aggressive ones that come originally from Eastern Europe.... almost totally eradicated the more benign British version.

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 21/04/2011 18:32

Omg worraliberty! Thats so sad! The pics of the kds toys! Sad

And what the man said!

"There was a light dangling from the roof and about a dozen people, men, women and a baby who started to cry when she saw me. They were eating sandwiches and just stared back at me. I was scared and shut the hatch straight away.

When I was 12 I found a sleeping bat in the sleeve of my dressing gown Grin I just about shat myself and never, ever slept in that room again - my big brother had to trade.

zingzillachinchilla · 10/05/2011 16:11

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets - how did you get on? I've just read your post after searching on MN for posts about bats. We've been hearing some scratching noises overnight lately, and I know we've had bats in our loft in the past but they've never been noisy. I've called the Bat Conservation Trust people to come and take a look - to be honest I'm hoping it's the bats and not mice! Will venture up there tonight to check it out. There has recently been significant bat activity at dusk over the past week or so... wonder if it's linked?

Hope it's not felves... although I like the idea of moving out for a week - does that involve a mandatory stay in a 5 star hotel??

RobF · 10/05/2011 16:12

It'd be unusual for mice to be up in the attic but not elsewhere in the house. It's probably bats. or birds. or wasps or bees.
