to not want to take DD to OOH doctors?

Had a call from DD's nursery at abot lunchtime. Apparently there have been cases of hand foot and mouth and they were unsure as to whether she had it, they suggested I get her a docs appointment.
Well I called as soon as the afternoon appointments opened at 1pm. All gone within 30s Angry. I asked what I could do and was told I could turn up and wait but they had a lot of peple waiting as emergencies so I'd be waiting for a few hours. So I left work and picked DD up. She seemed fine. Went shopping on the way home and she is now sitting in her high chair playing and bossing me about.
She is defiitely a bit under the weather - she has had a couple of incredibly bad nights, has been off her food and more grumpy than normal. She also had a rash which we assumed was nappy rash. Howeer, she is not hot, not particularly unhappy and seems fine. If it is a virus the advice will be rest, water and calpol anyway.
So do i really have to drag her the hour round trip to the OOH doctor tonight? the only thing making me think I should is the fact it''s bank holiday weekend, and we are going away.

She is currently shouting CRUMPETS
I'm not just being a slack mother - she is fine, may be getting over something virally, but fine.

An OOh doctor? Is he dashingly swoon-makingly handsome Grin

StealthyKissBeartrayal · 21/04/2011 16:51

He's usually a woman :) (Lots of experience with out of hours)
mmm
not sure
She does have a small blister on the end of her tongue

You could always make sure you have the NHS direct no saved to your phone. If you're going away in the UK they'll be able to direct you to your nearest OOH clinic. I wouldn't bother otherwise and would be a bit Hmm at nursery telling me to get a dr appointment for a child who didn't seem to be ill.

I hope she stays ok.

cheesesarnie · 21/04/2011 16:53

personally i would because of bank holidays.and blister on tongue.

hope shes ok.btw you are so not 'a slack mother'stealth'Grin

StealthyKissBeartrayal · 21/04/2011 16:54

thanks :) Yes going away in the UK, although to the Lakes so prob no phone reception or walk in clinics, but I'm sure we will be fine

But what would be the point of going to the docs cs? Is there some nasty tongue blistering disease I need to rule out?

OP posts:
skaen · 21/04/2011 16:56

Sorry x-posted with blister on tongue! I still don't think i'd take her to the dr but would probably call a dr and check that I knew how to manage it.

lilbreeze · 21/04/2011 17:00

When dd1 had hand foot and mouth the gp diagnosed her but didn't prescribe anything so don't see point in going really

cheesesarnie · 21/04/2011 17:02

Grin no idea.just sounded proper!they probably wouldnt do anything but maybe phone them

heymammy · 21/04/2011 17:03

When dd1 had hand, foot and mouth there was nothing the doc could actually do except declare that she had to stay off school for a week Hmm, so unless she goes massively downhill I wouldn't bother with OOH

heymammy · 21/04/2011 17:04

x-post lil Grin

StealthyKissBeartrayal · 21/04/2011 17:05

well she has been dancing to the CBeebies Thursday song in that bottom bobbing way toddlers do, and she has just come through and been cheeky :o I'd feel a right fraud taking her to the docs, will call 111 when DH home

Stealthy

If she takes a sudden turn for the worse over the bank holiday this is what you need - www.chocltd.co.uk/patients/temporary-residents.html

PS the weather is going to be great up here this weekend!

Bumps x

Bumpsadaisie · 21/04/2011 17:07

PS you would get to see a doctor easily - just phone Cumbria Health On Call and they refer to the out of hours GPs, probably at Westmorland General in Kendal.

Indith · 21/04/2011 17:08

Oh no! Poor baby. I wouldn't bother either but as someone else has suggested I would ring and just ask for the nurse to give you a quick a call with symtoms to watch for/any instructions on how best to manage it if she gets worse and have more discomfort. Lakes isn't exactly Outer Mongolia, if things get so bad that she absolutely needs to see someone right away then you'd probably be calling off your holiday anyway.

TheOriginalFAB · 21/04/2011 17:09

Going to the OOH will confirm if your child has it or not.

Indith · 21/04/2011 17:13

What time is dh due home? If you decide you want to take her before he gets home rather than leaving it until late then you are welcome to drop ds here.

StealthyKissBeartrayal · 21/04/2011 17:25

Thank you INdith :) DH is home and agrees with me - we'll call 111 and see what they say

Why don't you go to the pharmacist? They are pretty good at spotting what these things are. Also NHS choices has some pictures in the hand foot and mouth section, you could compare?

eggyminniewhingesagain · 21/04/2011 17:31

good info here and

here

If it seems to be Hand Foot and Mouth there is no need to take to a GP, as it is viral and can be treated safely at home. By all means go to the doc if they are very unwell in anyway, but no need just to 'get it confrmed'

Do you get a nurse if you ring 111? It's not in our area at the moment

jenga079 · 21/04/2011 17:50

Um, the Lakes has both phone reception and doctors!

2rebecca · 21/04/2011 18:14

Agree nothing a doc can do for hand foot and mouth anyway. I'd google some info on it, look at some images and if it looks like that just isolate her a bit and give her analgesics if she's sore. That's all the doc will tell you to do anyway.

Knackeredmother · 21/04/2011 19:17

I feel your pain. My son has it now and is sooooo poorly, can't even swallow his own saliva. I am heading to ooh simply to get some codeine, calpol and brufen aren't touching it. I didn't go for a diagnosis though as it is pretty obvious what it is and there is no treatment other than supportive.
We have cancelled our holiday tomorrow but sounds like your little one has a
Mild case.
Enjoy your trip and yanbu for foregoing the docs!
