Bloody return flight on Flybe from Exeter to Glasgow in June! It's more expensive and 4x longer in time to go by train or I'd do that on principle, just for the sodding booking fee. How can they get away with that? Bastards. Also they "pre-select" seats on the website, make out that it's your choice and charge you £fucking6 each way for the privilege unless you make very sure to uncheck the seat.

And travel insurance for a 2 day trip to Glasgow? I don't think so. And really, no, I do not wish to take any bloody "baggage" as you so delightfully phrase it.

Bastards.

Fly with a real airline or be prepared for a battle of wits, up to and including having to wear 4 t shirts, 3 shirts and a jumper at the same time to get past the weight restrictions.

Good old Flybe. I fly with them a lot and have learnt you have to go against all your usual instincts as you book. Ignore any box that looks like you have to click it (usually red with bold writing) and instead use the ones that look like really negative (grey with pale writing). Then you can usually book without too many extra charges. For what it's worth, once you're at the airport, I find flybe is usually much better than the other budget airlines. Check in yesterday took 30seconds, they let me on with my collection of handbaggage (instead of the 'one bag' policy) and bought a free wispa to a SCREAMING child behind me that was not believing his mum's pleading that he needed to keep his seatbelt on and the flight attendants would be round soon to serve food.

Anyhow, enjoy Glasgow!

I read this yesterday from the MSE newletter about Ryanair and Easyjet putting their charges up again. According to the article, there are ways around it though, so might be worth a look.

It is a total rip off, I agree.

Kikithecat · 21/04/2011 12:34

Ryanair:£24 to book by any card other than the Ryanair cair. Also £8 per person to check in online. £40 each if you are brave enough to try to check in at the desk!

Rip off merchants - yanbu

keepingupwiththejoneses · 21/04/2011 13:02

This is just 1 reason why I don't have a credit card.

nocake · 21/04/2011 13:15

Once you've paid the extra charges it's often as cheap, or cheaper, to fly with one of the non-budget airlines. You then get better service and a flight to where you want to go rather than some obscure airport. Buy a Ryanair ticket to Frankfurt and it will get you to Frankfurt-Hahn airport, only 124km from Frankfurt!!!

duchesse · 21/04/2011 15:19

keeping- it's £9 to book with a debit card. Unless you have an electron card, which is free but held by about 3 people in the UK. It's been such a long time since I last bought an air ticket not through the internet that I don't even know if it's possible, and if it is, how one would go about paying for it- I believe one is no longer allowed to pay in cash for plane tickets.

kiki- I can safely say that I will never, ever willingly travel Ryanair. Time to break

YANBU.
I think that prices should be transparent at the beginning but then perhaps no-one would book with them.

Halifax cards are all Electrons. I doubt there are only a handful of Halifax customers about.

Bogeyface · 22/04/2011 10:39

Fabby, Halifax do electron on their basic account but most of their accounts are Visa Debit. We opened a basic account a while back to keep certain payments seperate and got Electron cards but our main current account is Visa Debit.
