Cars

So DH was made redundant and with that went his BMW company car, for a long while we struggled, living off savings and redundancy money etc the whole time we still have my Audi A3 (this is important because it fits our children in it).
Last year with pretty much the last of our savings because DH gets some contract work I am bought a £1,000 car which dies on us a fortnight after we buy it and is uneconomical to repair.
DH tells this tale of woe to his father who offers us an interest free loan to buy another car.
So DH comes home with a 2 seater, after all I have the Audi to drive and he only needs to transport himself.
I was pretty fucking annoyed but thought ah poor DH he's had a hard time of it and he assured me it was cheaper on petrol, insurance etc - it wasn't.
Fast forward to this month and he has a new job with a company car but now the issue is that nobody wants to buy the two seater or part ex it for a reasonable amount of money, it would appear to have lost £4k in less than 6 months.
Now I have gone a bit mental and said you should never have bought the bloody thing in the first place, I know I probably ABU but god I'm hacked off, I've lived like a church mouse for all this time and wish I'd been the bad guy who said no to buying the car, but feel you really shouldn't have to say that to a grown man should you ?

It's not 'martydom' to have two cars and to have chosen unwisely with one of them.

no its not, (it's martyrdom actually but now I am being pedantic )but moaning about the depreciation after agreeing to a substantial loan (albeit non interest) when he was out of work so she in her own words had to live like a church mouse because of the repayments smacks of martyrdom.

I have two cars and a mobile home, if me or my husband came out of work we would down size accordingly, and definitely would not borrow money for an expensive car, the mobile home would go followed by the most expensive car to run.

OP cannot complain now, she agreed it at the time but now resents it...bit bloody late ..

oh and before OP says it

OK my lovely, I will make your day yet again and I will fuck off now .... again Grin

The point is he is a grown man and you expect people with responsibilities to act appropriately and buy things suitable to the needs as a family, pardon me for not kicking off when he ignored all that because I thought poor bugger he's having a rough time of it.
He's now not having a rough time of it so he's fair game Grin

Can he not take a cash option instead of the company car, and use the penis extension two-seater?

namechangertoday · 21/04/2011 21:25

He might be able to but then I would still be without a car as we won't be able to get finance that I would be willing to pay the interest rates of for a while.

Dp reckons you'd have to have bought a brand new Aston Martin Vantage for £70k to lose that kind of money. A Porsche Boxster loses about 3k a year from brand new

OP YANBU and DP (who knows his stuff having worked in car sales for several years and restored classic cars to show-winning and magazine feature standard) agrees - he reckons your DH is bullshitting you so he can keep his car!!

Now we're both gagging to know what the car is [bugrin]

namechangertoday · 21/04/2011 22:02

It's nothing special at all, it wasn't even brand new. He phoned the dealership today to see if they'd have it back off him and they've said yes for a grand less than he paid for it. But I don't think they sell any suitable cars to part ex it against, I can't see them writing him a cheque can you ?
He's done 7,000 miles in it so does that sound right ?
The problem will be finding a buyer privately, who has cash lying around right now or else the garages are going to price it low unless we take an inflated one or brand new one off them.

It's not a new car though, it was a nearly new one so the 1/3 off it already happened when he bought it, if it's say it's worth 2/3's less than a new one I might buy it myself it would be such a bargain !

How long has he had it? If the cost to him is £1000, then 7000 miles on a £1000 is not that bad really. Get them to buy it off him if they give him that kind of deal.

It's bloody summer, it's a 2-seater, of course now is the time to sell it! Have a look at Exchange and Mart or Auto Trader and see what similar cars go for. Inform yourself then you won't be made a mug of.

Auctions are great, sure you get about 20% less than the open market, but at least it sells and you get the cheque a week later, minus selling fees.
