My back garden backs onto a public alleyway which is maybe 8ft wide, on the other side is local park, there are a few trees inbetween, then it is open with a swing park in the middle.

The park has been here longer than I have, the noise during the summer isn't too bad, (laughter is good) I'm not great on distances but I would say the playground is probably 40ft from my back door.

My gripe is a big thick rope that has appeared hanging from a tree inbetween my house and the park. ( about 16ft from my gate ) accross the alley and 2 gardens along, (nothing to do with the swingpark) it appeared at the weekend and has become the new hangout for all the kids, Ive no idea who put it there or why, first I knew of it was the screaming and laughter on sunday morning, I thought that maybe one of my neighbours was having a kids party in their gardens as it was too loud to be from the playground. My neighbours are none the wiser than me.

I use my back gate more than my front door so soon noticed it, Since sunday there have constantly been between 10 and 20 kids (sometimes older kids) constantly there, the dog 2 doors down is going mental as he barks at anyone walking down the alley so this noise drives him mad, (he is locked out most of the day as his owners are at work, He has a doghouse in the garden)

I'm not a killjoy and I do like hearing kids enjoying themselves but there have also been many fights and arguments over this bloody rope, I have found it hard stopping myself going out and getting involved, I can see it clearly from my bedroom window now and there are about 20 kids (teenagers) there, god knows how many bikes are just thrown on the ground, covering alot of the footpath.

I don't think I can face a summer of this, I would normally have no problem going to the local shops at this time using the back way as its very much closer but I am a bit wary now and I am fed up of the noise,

Would any of you consider creeping out when its dark and cutting it down if you were me?

I'm imagining the DC faces when they see it's gone Sad

How about givivg it a couple of weeks to see if the noise dies down?

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 20/04/2011 20:37

Get it down..it sounds bloody dangerous apart from the fact that it is impeding your gate and your peace!

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 20/04/2011 20:39

Take a gander at this and see how you feel...

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 20/04/2011 20:40

Loads of accidental hangings and bashed in heads basically

GypsyMoth · 20/04/2011 20:40

can i ask what the kids are doing with it? or using it for?

sorrytosayivebeenthere · 20/04/2011 20:43

I don't want to spoil the fun for the kids but ive been sat in my kitchen about 4 or 5 times this week and heard arguments and fighting over this rope,

It is nice when i'm in my kitchen (i spend alot of time in there) with the door open hearing kids laughter but some of what ive heard this week hasn't been so nice, obvious bullying and arguments over a flipping rope,

I have found an excuse every time to step out of my gate to see what is occuring but there are just so many kids, I worry about getting involved as it would be obvious where I live and this area is not the best,

This rope is not on your property and doesn't belong to you?

If you think it is breaking a law then report it

bubblecoral · 20/04/2011 20:44

I'd ring the council and get them to move it.

heliumballoons · 20/04/2011 20:45

this one is very local to me -and affected lots of people even those who didn't know the boy.

sad

sorrytosayivebeenthere · 20/04/2011 20:46

They are using it as a swing, it has been knotted alot at the bottom,

I just cannot fatham who would put it there, there was alot of tree work done there a few years ago ( very windy, branches broken, so cut back) surely if it was left by the council tree workers then it would have been discovered before now?

WorzselMummage · 20/04/2011 20:47

I'd go out at 4am, climb the tree and chop the bloody thing down.

sorrytosayivebeenthere · 20/04/2011 20:49

I have not said that it is my property and I do not know if it being there is breaking the law,

All I know is a summer of this is gonna drive me mad and before long it will cause probs between the local kids.

Ring your local council (there's probably a sign at the park with the relevant numbers on) as they'll take it down very quickly if there's any chance someone could be injured and they'd be sued.

Someone set up one of those mini trampolines in a hole with a pallet next too it. Must have taken some effort to construct the arrangement. It wasn't visible from the park but you could see the kids using itl bouncing and jumping over it.
Another time someone also put a homemade ramp made from pallets on our local cycle track. It was used a lot but then it broken and there were massive nails sticking out of the wooden pieces which was just left beside the track. I phoned and it was gone the next day.

onagar · 20/04/2011 20:57

I was checking in case I misunderstood and they'd tied it to part of your property.

Since it isn't you can only report it as a potential hazard. Unless you know otherwise you have to assume it belongs to someone. You can't go around cutting up someone else's property because it encourages the kids to play too loudly.

gillybean2 · 20/04/2011 20:58

Also it's often teenagers or well meaning adults who set these things up without thinking of the consequences. You can't tell who did it but I doubt the tree cutters left it behind.

TastesLikePanda · 20/04/2011 21:00

Get a load of local mums to go and play on it with you - kids won't be seen within 10 miles of it then!

Seriously though - I'd ring the council and report it as a hazard.

sorrytosayivebeenthere · 20/04/2011 21:03

I will give it till after the easter weekend, maybe by then it would have bothered one of my neighbours enough to do something about it,

If by tues its still there and still the probs are still the same I will see about about getting it cut down.

It is 9'oclock , pitch dark but I can hear noise and laughter out there, there is no lighting in the alleyway, They are prob teenagers but even I wouldnt go out there when it is this dark. its not safe.

I love pandas idea Grin

Just eyeball any youngsters coming near.

sorrytosayivebeenthere · 20/04/2011 21:17

I am in a street of 10 houses which back onto this alleyway, the alleyway is very long and cuts off at various points leading to other housing, none of us have young kids, I and prob 3 others have older teenagers, I have asked those that I know if they know anything about this rope and they have all said that they don't,

My immediate neighbours, 2 doors each way don't have kids and work full time so havn't been as aware as me, a few neighbours further down have said that they have heard stuff but just thought it was in the alley as alot of stuff does occur down there, I must admit I am prob the only one whoe uses the back gate regualary as most of the others are cut off by trees so I prob do notice it more,
