It was sort of daring in its way. The programme was trying to get stores
to stop selling grown up clothes for little children

They did a bit of direct action by raiding superstores. Matalan got the message and took the lines off the shelves. (Other stores did not)

A top lady Manager of Mumsnet was interviewedon the prog.

The rest of the prog was doing sex education for senior children in
a school ....Both items were more than a little daring. It goes on for the next 2 nights.

I caught it by accident and was really surprised at how far they went, the presenter looked really angry with the stores. It was pretty good viewing.

capricorn76 · 20/04/2011 17:33

@ Strandedbear - the stores should be blamed, if they didn't sell those clothes, nobody could buy them. Some parents are crap and need to be saved from themselves. The stripper outfits shouldn't be available to them for the sake of their kids.

GabbyLoggon · 20/04/2011 17:36

STRAND...it wont wash matey. Stores could justify selling vodka to 5 year olds on that basis. (dont kid yourself about how far business would go for bigger dosh margins)

Yes, Cap, that presenter is full throttle. And I have no reason to believe she is not sincere.
It was amazing when they blew that condom up to an enormous size.

Agree strandedbear I don't really like to see these things in the shops but if these items weren't selling, they wouldn't be stocked.
But then a high profile program like that is one way to reach the parents who might be buying these things without thinking, or maybe they don't watch this kind of program, so may be a waste of time trying to reach them.
But how ele is to be tackled? Should it be tackled?
There are a lot of things and decisions that I think as a responsible parent, I should be able to make for myself. Society should not be able to dictate to me who I allow to look after my children or what I put in their lunch-boxes etc, so in that sense, why should we be told what to and what not to dress our children in?
I do think it is awfully sad when I see a small child in clothes I wouldn't wear, and I do often wonder what goes through a parents mind when they buy these items, but I'm not sure what I think of there being people/ tv shows/ goverment etc instructing and restricting what we should buy.

On the other hand, clearly there are parents out there that don't seem to think about the message these clothes may be portraying or think about whether or not they are appropriate, but what's fine for me may not be for someone else.

For example, I don't see the harm in McDonalds for lunch every now and again, but I have a friend who has never taken her 3 year old there.
I think fruit-shoots are fine, others think they are the devils work.
I don't think skin-tight underwear with diamonte(sp) words on them are suitable for a 4 year old, others might not see the big deal I do...............

I am confused as to what I think

------------

They couldn't as that is against the law.

Shops should be held to account but then so should the parents that buy it, the manufactures that make it and the designers etc.

GabbyLoggon · 20/04/2011 17:58

Yes but you seem to be implying a free for all would work. ( I dont think the free market works except for greedbuckets) we can do better than that

I cant believe they were just focusing on the 7-8 yr olds, mainly.
I have seen high heeled shoes for 3 yr olds, pink sparkly bratz ones at that.

I wouldnt let my daughter watch bratz, let alone wear their god awful merchandise.

And there has been much worse than what was shown last night, including pole dancing kits for children. WHO ON EARTH thought that was a good idea??!!

DD aged 12 was bored within 15 minutes and went to watch a video. Her words were along the lines of "I didn't need a padded bra at 10, I had my own". The pants with "Love" - supposed to be worn under something and not a bit issue in my opinion. We both liked the slashed leggings. The shoes were off because they could cause damage, the sequinned T shirt - depends on the mind reading it I suppose. Massive over-reaction in my opinion.

fatlazymummy · 20/04/2011 19:02

I saw a bit of it. It was a load of patronising tosh IMO.

However much you might dislike it we have chosen a system for our economy where businesses are supposed to do what makes a profit within the law.

If you don't like what a business does then change the law, but until you do it is no use trying to shift the blame onto them.

Some parents are crap and need to be saved from themselves

You want superstores to take over the role of social services? Is this part of the Big Society?

Cat98 · 20/04/2011 19:57

What made me laugh was that theuy actually bought these items before cutting them up and returning them! Thus giving money to the store ans increasing demand for the clothes. Wtf!

What I would say for channel 4 TV on this . It was really radical. Can you imagine ITV or the BBC tackling major store chains up front?

Store chains are in it to make loads of dosh in a fairly reasonable way(polite smiles is not enough on its own)

We are writing about rip off Britain. (Which many customers feel we have descended to )

Stores as social workers.?..they pretend to be just that in their smiley advertising/ Matalan took channel 4s message.

If almost everyone is a parent at some time in their lives; there will be dodgy parents. (I dont think Jo Frost is an answer)

Just imagine if every man was a pro footie player; or every woman a
lawyer....there would be some dodgy footie and lawyers about.

What every person is, is an human being of our tribe, erect and giving it wellie. As Darwin alklegedly said.

Happy Shopping and a Happy easter. almost everyone is flooding to the coast in my county (and beyond)
