Me and DH have been invited to a rugby match on Thursday night by one of DHs friends. I then made a comment about Jonny Wilkinson and DHs friend looked at me like I'd spat in his face. It turns out that there are 2 forms of rugby and that this game is the other form of rugby. AIBU to have not known this?

No, Essex Grin. I know the whole Rugby thing, but League and Union didn't split until after that, so technically Rugby School would be the spritual home of both codes

GabbyLoggon · 20/04/2011 18:23

Ask Kenny Logan , he know all about it. Did anyone see him play?

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 20/04/2011 18:23

Well then i'd support Wigan Grin. Enjoy. And 'Simply the Best' by Tina Turner is practically compulsory at League mathches, so feel free to sing along.

SauvignonBlanche · 20/04/2011 18:28

It was one of the first things I learnt as a child!
There was bad blood between the two codes I remember ny Dad telling me about a player that had taken League's money, he wasn't allowed back in the clubhouse. Now Union is professional that doesn't apply.
League is more common up North but Union is equally popular there.
I'm afraid is does have a class link, League being seen as a working man's game.
Can't comment on the style, I've never watched a league game.

poxoxo · 20/04/2011 18:36

I think its one of those things that you probably should know. League is a vastly superior game and the atmosphere is much better at league games then it is at union (league atmospheres are similar to football) so you're onto a winner.

meditrina · 20/04/2011 19:13

The 15 a side game is slow for both league and union.

7s anyone?

poxoxo · 20/04/2011 19:21

League has 13 not 15 players. 7s or 9s is terrible its rugbys answer to basketball

ProfYaffle · 20/04/2011 19:22

Enjoy the thighs, they really are quite startling Wink

musicmadness · 20/04/2011 20:40

You are going to watch the superior code then. Wink

I watch both but I'm far more interested in League and have a season ticket at wigan :) League tends to be a lot faster and more of the points come off tries rather than penalties like in Union.

Bradford vs Leeds should be a good match for you. Its a derby match so everyone raises their game for them.

Jonathan Davies went from Llanelli to Widnes in 1989. Caused a MASSIVE scandal in both worlds.

A few other Welsh players followed suit around that time, there were Welsh and Union fans who called Davies a traitor for wanting to earn a salary for the work he was having to put in to remain fit enough to play. It's all very well for the surgeons, lawyers, accountants etc of this world to play for the love of the game but when normal daily life is a factory or mine, there isn't that luxury - there certainly wasn't when the codes split. That's why league is a largely Northern sport.

Ninx · 20/04/2011 20:52

Well I don't understand Rugby at all.

Didn't go to that sort of school Sad

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 20/04/2011 21:06

Do you want to understand it? If you want to then learn. I went to the kind of school where the girls played hockey and managed to leave with no knowledge of the rules, even though I had to play it for years Grin

Ninx · 20/04/2011 21:14

We played hockey at my all-girls' grammar school but I don't remember any rules for that either. We were made to play in the snow so we'd run around negotiating and report back to the hardened bitter lesbian teacher saying, "blue team won three nil" or whatever we had decided.

I remember my first ever detention was given because I tried to console a non-sporty person with the shocking words, "it's only a game", after the teacher had tried to humiliate her and include the rest of the class in doing so.

I had to write an essay about the meaning of team spirit and why I was wrong. I did.

And thus followed my second detention... Grin

thebestisyettocome · 20/04/2011 21:19

Tell your friend who hates Johnny Wilkinson that when he (JW) was growing up he was a huge Wigan fan and even had a poster of a legendary player Ellerey Hanley up on his wall. Not many people know that, so you'll impress him with you rugby knowledge Grin

DS1 plays Union but we are big League fans. I hope I don't have a chip Hmm but imho League is the better game. It's incredible that in the 21st century saying that could have you labelled 'a pleb.'

microserf · 20/04/2011 22:18

League is rubbish anyway. I wouldn't go Grin boring game.

seadog · 21/04/2011 12:52

YANBU its hardly essential knowledge.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 21/04/2011 20:41

Hope you're having fun! It looks like a good match so far.

popelle · 22/04/2011 10:24

Its was enjoyable, its even rougher then I thought it would be. It was entertaining although from DHs friends point of view the wrong team won. There was some fighting between the two sets of fans which I didn't think happened in rugby. It is certainly something I would consider going to again.
