DH says as long as she has block on she can be in the sun... And that I'm being overprotective keeping her under her pram hood / under a tree / hanging a blanket over the hood...

Am I right or is he??

She's 6.5 months....

id keep her in the shade if it were me ....

compo · 20/04/2011 12:44

Can she crawl yet? If she can't yanbu
if she's just lying on a blanket then the blanket needs to be in the shade

gillybean2 · 20/04/2011 12:44

Why smother her in block when she could be in teh shade instead?
In the sun she will overheat and block is meant to be used when you are exposed to teh sun. DOn't put her in teh sun and you don't need it (or come to rely on it and think it's ok/works)!
She should be shaded imo

Lawm01 · 20/04/2011 12:45

Well, personally I'd keep her out of the sun as much as poss, but not to an overly protective extent. A few rays will not harm her if she has sunblock on.

Try to keep the sunlight out of her face but other than that enjoy the fresh air and warmth.

DooinMeCleanin · 20/04/2011 12:45

She does need some sun for vit D, but only a few minutes a day.

Pootles2010 · 20/04/2011 12:45

I keep mine in shade, partly becuase I can't sunblock face/hands (it would just get swallowed when he sucks his fingers). I thought i was really cautious, until hv told me off for not using sunblock and sunhat when he's in his buggy in the shade...

TheVisitor · 20/04/2011 12:46

Sunblock and shade for this age.

sausagesandmarmelade · 20/04/2011 12:49

I don't think there's any need for the blanket over the pram...let her look around and feel the breeze if there is one.

Definately minimise time in the sun....and keep her in the shade for longer...

Lots of drinks - but you know that already

Anythingwithagiraffeonit · 20/04/2011 12:49

No, she doesn't crawl.

Thanks everyone... I will read this thread to DH!

Hood over - definately and loose cotton clothes....bare feet is fine

PlentyOfPrimroses · 20/04/2011 12:51

I'd do sunblock and shade but let her have a few minutes in the sun in the late afternoon.

jojowest · 20/04/2011 12:53

yes a few mins in sun is fine but not lying in full glare for hours

just lying in shade on blanket is lovely with bare legs and arms

tryingtoleave · 20/04/2011 12:54

Sunblock is not recommended for children under 12 months- better to keep them in shade.

IWantAnotherBaby · 20/04/2011 13:02

Keep her in the shade. You do not need direct sunlight for vit D! Sunblock is for only when exposure is unavoidable.

ontheverge101 · 20/04/2011 13:09

Recently had my DS (6) tested for vitamin D levels and iron due to H having some tests done (came back he was Vit D deficient). It appears DS is also Vitamin D deficient.Shock
Dr's opinion was sun smart 'policy' was too draconian and people should be exposed for 30 minutes to sun otherwise provide supplement. NHS Direct also recommend children from 6.5 months to 5 years also be provided with supplements as matter of course.

Hope that helps

colditz · 20/04/2011 13:12

Sunblock and shade? All the time? Yes, if you want them to have rickets....
