YABU. The FULL TIME staff should take priority when the off duty is being made, you slot in around them and their needs. Plus if you were that bothered then you should have requested it off.

The FULL TIME staff should take priority when the off duty is being made

Um, why?

TidyDancer · 20/04/2011 19:15

I agree the full time staff should be prioritised in some instances, part time staff can very often find other times to do things that full time staff can't. It's not a flawless way of doing things, but it's generally how things are done at my work and it does more or less work out fairly.

And YABU OP. You do 10 hours a week and you get most of the holidays at home by the sound of it.

feggyart · 20/04/2011 19:18

I do 19 hours on nights and am working easter sunday and monday

Really? I'd think the company would be on dodgy ground legally - discriminating against PT workers...

TidyDancer · 20/04/2011 19:31

I don't think it's discrimination and it's actually not written in any contracts where I work. It's just the right thing to do IMO. If someone is in for only two days a week and someone else is in for all five, if holiday was granted to only one of them (both having asked at the same time), the reasonable thing to do would be to give it to the one who doesn't have an additional three weekdays off. I'm not saying that it should always be the way things are done, but I certainly don't think it's unfair to make decisions like that.

backwardpossom · 20/04/2011 19:51

I think it's unfair - all workers should have the same rights, PT or FT. But hey ho, we'll have to agree to disagree.

TidyDancer · 20/04/2011 20:44

Yes we will.

fledtoscotland · 20/04/2011 21:11

It sucks but its the nature of shift work that you have to work public holidays. I'm working Good Friday and Easter Saturday but have the sunday & monday off. However I am working Friday, Saturday, Sunday & monday the next weekend (we have to work 6 out of the 8 key dates) so its swings and roundabouts.

Re the childcare, without meaning to be unsympathetic as I have exactly the same problem, it is your responsibility not your employers and if this is an ongoing problem with childcare early in the mornings, you need to consider a flexible working request so that you arent finishing work on the mornings your DH is leaving early

cat64 absolutely agree with you, but I was commenting on the posts saying that PT workers shouldn't have the same holiday rights as FT workers, which isn't fair IMO. If someone is employed PT to cover for others being off, then that's fine as it's written into a contract. What I don't think is fair is when a PT worker and a FT worker both want the same day off and the FT worker gets it simply because they're FT. Surely that's discriminating against the PT worker.

xstitch · 21/04/2011 21:19

Sorry YABU. I work 12hr per week and I am working Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday this weekend and start of next week.

unfitmother · 21/04/2011 21:23

YABU, don't see the problem but the suggestion that "The FULL TIME staff should take priority when the off duty is being made, you slot in around them and their needs" is ridiculous and is not how I do my staff rota.
