i am taking some teens down to London to watch Royal Wedding....

a bit worried about the terrorist thing now,i wasnt previously but i am now!! just niggling feelings really. but feeling more worried due to seeing on the news police apparently 'scouring' London looking for hidden bombs and weapons

However,if thats reassuring for everyone,it makes it worse for me.....as i know for a fact there are hundreds and hundreds of geocaches hidden across London!!

and they have been there for years! some large enough to hold devices or weapons or whatever!!

so,terrorists....its more possible in my mind now i've realised this.

AIBU????

Mummylin, I tried to use my phone. I really struggled because my sense of direction is rubbish! Eventually I used the map and it showed me I was getting closer. There was a pretty good hint, too. I'm going to show DH later!

I've only got a cheap phone for phone calls and texts so no idea how good the phones are. The iphone sounds good but costsw far more than I'm willing to pay.
The older cheaper GPSs often don't have as good reception as the newer ones so can lose it if in a forest.
Geocaching.com has reviews of many GPSs. My garmin forerunner 305 was about £100 but is mainly for training as does heart rate, speed, distance etc and doesn't have maps.
We have a garmin gecko but the reception on that isn't as good.
Looking at the garmin website handhelds are 90-£150 for a basic one without or with maps.
Some GPs are mains rechargable others are battery powered.

We started with Garmin Gecko but, as 2rebecca says, they can get a bit lost in the woods. However, after it died we bought a Garmin Etrex H which was about £60 and is much more sensitive and pretty reliable.

rainbowinthesky Batteries seem to last reasonably well and you can put in several hundred locations. Haven't compard with a phone. Colleague of mine has used his smart phone for caching but although he can download locations from the web site he doesn't seem to be able to enter them by hand - which would be useless for some multi-stage or puzzle caches.

What do you want to know mummylin?

glastocat · 21/04/2011 17:53

If anyone in Cork wants a geocaching lesson I'm happy to give one. Grin

There are 2 sets of co-ordinates on a cache site on geocaching.com. One is the East/West longitude latitude system that can be used world wide and you feed these by hand into a GPS once you have got the correct unit setting on your GPS, or download directly through a cable to the GPS. The second is the UK Ordinance Survey grid ref which is 12 figure rather than the usual 6 figure. This allows you to place the geocache approximately on a pink or orange OS map of that area. Some GPSs also allow you to enter locations using this system (the gecko does, the forerunner doesn't I have to use long and lat).
With urban caches a GPS isn't that necessary as you can tell where the cache is from the roads on the website if you look at the map of it.

I use an iphone to geocache. Its brill, I havent had a chance to check the updated app yet but we do have the full version so can keep uploading new ones when we have found each one. The signal on it has been really good, occassionally its gone a bit vague but I think thats more our searching skills. The beauty of it is that we charge the phone in the car if travelling between caches. If you use an iphone, make sure that you arent running the app in the background whilst your phone is in your pocket etc as it will drain your battery loads.
