Doesn't the 4 mean the month i.e. April?

johnthepong · 18/04/2011 21:53

best before is different from use by and they are allowed to sell it past this date.

worraliberty · 18/04/2011 21:54

I'd read that as best before April 2011... and as it's April 2011 i'd say it's in date until may 2011!

Plus, didn't you check before you purchased?

The government is in the process of issuing new guidelines and, before long, the supermarkets will stop using 'best before' and 'use by' dates instead. This is because we are throwing away ridiculous amounts of perfectly edible food.

Are you sure it doesn't say best before end of 4 2011?

If its best before April, then thats March.

Somerset beat me to it. It's at its best before that date, but not poisonous afterwards. Well, not immediately anyway.

BlooferLady · 18/04/2011 22:02

I hope you haven't thrown it away.

squeakytoy · 18/04/2011 22:02

it is still only "best before".. which means it will be perfectly fine, and will remain so for a few more months yet..

I'm still getting through custard powder that was up in 2007.

This is going to turn into one of those threads isn't it?

The Government's latest idea to combat food waste is to ban "Best Before" dates -

My gran had a huge walk in larder packed to the rafters. We always used to joke that if there was a nuclear apocalypse that we'd go there as there was plenty of food.

When she died and we had to clear it all out, there was a tin of ham so old it had the price tag on from pre-decimal.

My dad took it home for 'testing purposes'....

There are thousands of products on the shelves in Tesco, it's not entirely inconceivable that they might miss one, surely? Just take the packaging back to Tesco and you'll get a refund. The food would be fine anyway...

It will be best before end april 2011. If it was BBE March it would have said BBE march, not BBE april. They have missed the E off.

I had an OOD bottle of milk in my shopping recently. Emptied it out, washed the bottle, next time I went in I got a refund and a £5 voucher. Fine by me :)
