To think almost £2000 a month in deductions is outrageous.

First, I am grateful to have a job which I love and enjoy doing during a time when lots of people are loosing their jobs.

I am currently on maternity leave and my kindly employer is paying me 100 percent of my salary for 4 months. I am going back part time at 3 months as I don't want to get used to being at home and resent needing to go back. I gross with this employer 3000 per month, prior to commencing maternity leave, I did some overtime and earned 2450, which was due to be paid this month. I got my payslip today, and note that after deductions, including 130 childcare vouchers, I netted 3300. Now this is a welcome and much needed amount of money, I am just having difficulty with the amount of money taken out of my pay check. AIBU?

When I earned a good salary I was proud that I was contributing so much to this country. To think that the tax I paid could employ a nurse, a teacher, or even a binman to keep the streets clean and tidy made me very happy.

But in reality the government are funding school in pakistan rather than looking at our own educational problem areas! Wink

CheekyLittleSox · 18/04/2011 15:05

sorry that was in reply to HHLimbo

Nataby - I can tell you are new around here :) Anyone who has been around a while knows they'll get mashed if they say how much they earn if it's a penny over the minimum wage Grin

Might be best to 'hide' the thread when if it gets too rough :) Don't take it personally :)

It's shitty having so much taken from what you earn, but hopefully you'll get some of it back later on!

hocuspontas · 18/04/2011 15:09

Yes, I think about all the tax I pay keeping those at the top at County Hall in the manner they are accustomed to. Lazy rich bastards. They need shooting.

I actually hate threads like these.....look what i got, look what i can buy, look how much i got blah blah blah....

Thanks, i checked coding and its correct.

Degrees, I don't understand your comment if 3000 nets 2000, how is it proportional to expect that 2450 equates to 1300?.
I usually net about 60% of my gross and expected similar with overtime. I got 50%. which I think is a big proportional deduction. I guess the consensus is because it's taxes, I am being unreasonable. Thanks to those who sympathize. I agree it's better being self employed. I can't do that with this job. I do some contractual work and proportionally, I see more of the money I earn.

Are you including the childcare vouchers as deductions? you should add them to your net income as they are something that you actually get.

HHlimbo- so did you smile when you paid tax? offer to give more up? I really belive that high-earners should pay more tax and that the deficit should have been reduced by increasing taxes rather than cutting services- but it doesn't stop me wincing when I look at my own payslip. Its also difficult to work out what the deductions are going to be on a monthly basis so I do sympathise with the OP.
Am slightly baffled as to why OP is going back pt after 3 months when she is being fully paid for 4 months? Not sure it will help.

Nataby · 18/04/2011 15:15

Thanks for the advise, now I will go read instructions on how to hide a thread:)

for using the word "check" YABU

onlylivinggirl · 18/04/2011 15:17

Nataby - your personal allowance and the lower rate tax bands will be allocated to your normal salary. Presumably you are a higher rate tax payer. Then the additional income will all be taxed at the higher rate (with no benefits of zero rates etc as this had been used up for the month)

JemAndTheHolograms · 18/04/2011 15:20

YANBU, my DH's earnings before deductions is £1250, after everything is taken off he comes out with £850. Completely shite!

suzikettles · 18/04/2011 15:21

How Does PAYE Work?

HTH

Nataby · 18/04/2011 15:31

Thank you Degrees, in my head , I calculated NI at 11%. I was going to stop using an accountant, but I think I best stay as it's more complicated than I thought. I thought I would be paying 20 percent on the extra earnings with some for NI. I was just shocked.

I was surprised how much tax I paid when I first got my pay slip. Then I thought about what that would pay for, and I felt proud and happy - yes I smiled! :)
I do think it should be possible to pay more tax voluntarily - eg instead of giving to charity. I think companies could also opt to pay more tax and advertise this as a sign of how community minded and responsible they are, because government spending is very carefully targetted and accounted for, and this is easier than doing personal research to check every charity.
There would have to be safeguards to ensure this money wasnt used for tax breaks/perks for priviledged groups of course.

Why are people berating the op for earning well and talking about it?
Even if you are paid well, it is very difficult to come to terms with the amount of tax one has to pay.

HHLimbo · 18/04/2011 17:00

Its true, all those PCT trusts with all their targets checking that NHS waiting times were going down and how the money was spent.

jasminetom · 18/04/2011 17:01

That is why I live in a tax free country, my money is all mine.

microfight · 18/04/2011 17:02

I always have the philosophy not to even think about gross and net, I pay a massive amount of tax but I try just to be thankful that the net wage is still good. What does get my goat is when people start moaning that the rich should pay more! If they saw how much I get deducted they may not think that life is so unfair!!
