to be peeved at parents changing their kids nappies in a busy restaurant?!

This happens quite frequently at the restaurant where I work and has happened three times that I've seen in my seven hour shift today! We have perfectly good and spacious baby changing facilities available where I work which are rarely in use, yet some parents seem to think that it's okay to whip off their childs poo-ey nappy at a bar/garden table, in front of around 50+ other paying guests and start changing before either leaving the nappy in a nappy bag on their table for one of us staff members to pick up when they leave or put the dirty nappy into our outside bins which are dotted between the tables!

The third time it happened I went over to the lady just as she was about to take off the nappy and just mentioned that we had changing facilities inside and she said "Yes, I know." And then carried on as if I'd said nothing!

I absolutely adore kids and cannot wait to work with them again, but I have no wish to see their poo covered bottoms whilst walking around taking food to people.

AIBU to think this is at least a bit weird if not socially unacceptable?!

I would tell them they can't do it and tell them to get inside. It's unhygenic and the stench must be terrible.

I agree! No need for it at all. why should they subject folk to this?. I would never do that, even in my own home I always changed nappies in the bathroom or nursery and I don't like it when I am in a friend's or relative's house and they change pooy nappies in front of guests.

The zoo near us has had to close it's toddler area (situated in the coffee shop) as some skanky parents were changing their dc nappies on tables and allowing them to use potties etc within the coffes shop. They were then leaving the nappies on the tables and emptying the potties by throwing the contents outside the door

It astounds me as to what some people deem acceptable hygiene and behaviour

YANBU how lazy can one person be not to use the changing facility. Do the parents piss in the bushes?

YANBU I don't often eat out and the last thing I want to see on a night out would be the sight of someone changing their child's nappy when I'm trying to eat.

I wouldn't do it unless a poonami had occurred and movement would result in mass seepage (my 5mo DS occasionally produces what seems like double his own weight in poo at one sitting). Wouldn't leave the nappy lying around afterwards though, even in a nappy sack, how gross.

Do the parents bother to use the facilities themselves or just drop 'em and have a satisfying dump outside aswell...?

Einstein, unsure if it's a joke or not but I work at a very reputable and popular Bar/Restaurant on the outskirts of Bath. We had, quite literally, hundreds of covers today, it was hetic and the last thing we needed was customer complaints about other customers doing this :(

The parents are pretty good at using the facilities themselves Though saying that, on less busy days when we get the odd drunken group of adults in it has been known for them to wonder into our little foresty area for a quick whizz We also get parents who let their kids pee in the bushes because the toilets are 'too far away'

YADNBU; how foul. Would these people decide to see to their own toilet arrangements outside in full view of people who are dining or drinking? Bet they wouldn't. You would be perfectly in order to insist that the offending customers use the baby change room for its intended purpose, as they would probably not prefer that everybody exposes fecal matter to the atmosphere in an eating area. That is the most unhygienic thing to do (blee)

And leaving the used nappy bags on the table! I hope they also left you a big tip, as well as a bag of shit. [boak]

saffy: Sorry, no can say, my restaurant is actually brilliant apart from the quirks of some customers! Our food is mostly homemade down to the sauces and everything and our chef is amazing considering his kitchen is a third of the size it should be for this kind of business! I'm very proud to work for a place like this :)

Oh that's so gross! If I was another customer I would struggle really hard not to say something.

The noodles: No tips with the shit. We rarely get tips from those sitting outside unfortunately! Way it goes in this business!

novice: I wish a customer did say something to one of these parents. We (being the staff) are not allowed, we can only recommend the changing facilities and the managers are powerless to it!

yanbu, i think you should tell them firmly though. eg if the lady just ignored you reminding about the facilities then you need to say it firmly "go and change your child's nappy in the correct area please" its really unhygenic. are there not rules/laws about needing to be 2 doors inbetween kitchen and toilet areas because of hygiene? i really don't understand what would lead any parent to think its right to do this. even if they have no facilities you would not feel happy about having to change them in a restaurant next to the food etc. and do they not wash their hands then just change nappy and back to their dinner?!?! how gross

Firawla: In case it upsets them enough to cause complaint or some such rubbish. Technically we can report it to a manager to deal with as a staff member doing it would seem unprofessional and our word isn't trusted/can be twisted/etc but by the time the manager can deal with the situ it's too late. Already been done. :(

Shaving: fleece in the chilled cabinet? That's just weird imo, why put a fleece in the chilled section?!

Many people seem to lack common sense, since starting to work at this restaurant I've discovered that to be more true than not

But surely if you had a Health Dept inspection while dirty nappies were being changed in the food area, there would be trouble for the area. Why can't restaurant management insist that health guidelines are followed?

(Am not in UK, but am assuming no shit in the food area is a common health guideline)
