to NOT want to give all my personal details when I buy a teddy bear?

Went in a famous name baby shop today.
I fell in love with a small teddy (£8.50) and decided to buy it for my baby (not yet born, but I like to be prepared).

Shop assistant: Can I have your name and postcode?
Me; No. Why?
SA: We at least need your postcode.
Me: For a bear?
SA: Yes, if there is a fault we need your postcode.
Me: I'll have a receipt though.
SA: But I need your postcode.
Me: No.

Shop assistant looked puzzled, then took my cash.

Now, I can understand for certain things they like to take loads of details (TV's etc) but it was a bloody teddy bear.

I presume my info would really be used for "marketing purposes", and to send me loads of mailings that I don't want.

Imagine the nightmare that shopping would become if every shop was doing this.

I'm not BU am I?

I used to work in a chain restaurant. They said they took full details (not just the postcode) to watch out for serial complainers who used to demand refunds constantly. As their policy was to refund at the time and write from Head Office sending vouchers, obviously they didn't want to be taken for a ride. If the same name kept reappearing, they would write to the person and suggest that their restaurants were not meeting their needs, and perhaps they shouldn't eat there anymore.

But in most places they don't ask for full details so I don't know how that can work.

Mamas and papas took back a bebea food processor thing, even though I'd lost the receipt because they were able to look it up on the system and print me out a new receipt. So I was pretty glad they take all my details each time, or I'd have been 90 quid down :)

YANBU. I've met rude staff in ToysRUs as well. They should update their staff training to ensure politeness.

SusanneLinder · 17/04/2011 14:33

I think YABU. The staff need to know that the bear is going to a good home. I work for SS an the amount of abandoned and neglected bears that we get calls about are frankly shocking. :0

Some people even neglect bears to the loft. This abuse of bears must stop.Shock :)

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 17/04/2011 15:36

YADNBU I always say no. Its only for their marketing crap and they could sell it!

Winds me up the expectant way they ask and then look all Hmm when you say no!

OrangeBernard · 17/04/2011 15:41

Pumpkin patch do this and get really arsey with you if you don't tell them

SurreyDad · 17/04/2011 15:57

If they cannot tell you what the data collection is for, then it is illegal for them to harvest it.

LaWeasel · 17/04/2011 15:59

If it's something expensive, yes I get it.

But it was a teddy ffs, would you really bother to take it back if it was broken?!

It annoys me in PP too, as I only ever by things on sale from there, so wouldn't be able to return anyway!

CheshireDing · 17/04/2011 18:33

Robinsons Country Leisure tried to do this to DH and he ended up arguing with them. The girl said it was in case he lost his receipt and needed to bring something back, to which his response was "well if I have lost the receipt and need to bring it back it will be my own fault then".

I also just give a fake address when I have to fill in the receipt on getting a refund/return something, so it's nonsense anyway.

microserf · 17/04/2011 19:13

YANBU, i stupidly gave all these details buying a fricking child's helmet today. i curse your spam emails in advance of receiving them, Evan's Cycles!

teddy adoption is a serious business though. surprised they didn't ask for a CRB.

sammich · 18/04/2011 02:04

i feel a bit left out i have never been asked for my address or phone number when buying something not even a tv maybe noone from where i am from cares about market research and i was only in mammas and pappas the other day buying loads of bits for a friend and i practically brought the whole store and nothing just a have a nice day

maybe it was my not so happy face that made them not ask

PoppyDoolally · 18/04/2011 04:42

i find that giving the post code for buckingham palace works a treat.

iscream · 18/04/2011 04:53

I used to, until a month ago. I haven't been asked since then, but have un registered from all the store email lists I was on after I heard of this virus. www.abc2news.com/dpp/news/state/security-breach-could-give-your-e-mail-address-to-scammers

iscream · 18/04/2011 04:54

Actually, it isn't the exact same thing, giving an e-mail address, but it still makes me want to say no.

Islandlady · 18/04/2011 07:13

I work for a large charity shop we HAVE to get a postcode and full name and address when giving a refund.

The reason is simple its to audit the Staff, it would be very very easy for
the cashier to keep a reciept for say a tenner then do a refund and pocket the dosh we dont use the postcode for marketing at all but from time to time we will write to the customer and ask if they had a refund, both myself and the customer also have to sign the refund receipt

So every time I do a refund ( and only the management team are allowed to do it) I am having to prove to my employers that I am not a thief and that the refund is genuine.

Most of our refunds are due to the item not fitting (although we have fitting rooms) and therefore we are not actually legally obliged to refund anyway and can put any restrictions we want

We also wont refund unless our ticket is still attached to the item, any faulty item IE loose button slight mark is clearly written on our ticket and priced accordingly therefore its very rare that we have to refund on faulty goods where the customer is legally entitled to a refund.

Its a pain but as a charity we have to protect our income

porcamiseria · 18/04/2011 10:43

yanby it really fucks me off when they do this, cunts!

Abr1de · 18/04/2011 10:45
