I think I'd be more scared of the French thinking I was unstylish in a lumpen British way...

The Parisians manage to live and survive in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe so I'm sure you'll cope. However, the safety of any capital city (including London, of course) rather depends on the commonsense of the visitor. I know Paris very well and have been visiting since I was 7 years old and can honestly say I've never felt the slightest bit unsafe. I'd not choose to hang around in the banlieues but then you've presumably not got a need to.

I'd be more worried about having to stand next to chic thin Parisian women who look down their noses at my frizzy hair and muffin top [eek]

Paris is beautiful, I love it. I can't see it being any less safe than London. But I do feel lumpen when I am there :o

I lived there for a while and didn't find it "unsafe", but if you're a lone woman there is much more sexual harassment on the streets than in other European cities.

It certainly wasn't unsafe when I lived there.

Yes, there are some pickpockets, and some dodgey areas, but aren't there in an major city?

There are some very safe areas, too, IMO, it depends where you are.

Well make sure you dont walk along swinging your handbag, or leave it on the floor when you sit outside at a cafe... and you wont be a target. :)

There are muggings in every town in every part of the world.. :)

Have you ever visited London? Only I think you'll find that Paris does not have the monopoly on crime.

breathing · 16/04/2011 13:45

Now Birmingham you should be afraid of visiting!

Report

stubbornhubby · 16/04/2011 13:47

be careful in the metro, the pinch point is when you go through the gate - they distract you and grab your bag.

GloriaSmut · 16/04/2011 13:47

Yes, second what squeaky has said. Don't make yourself a target for thieves. Be confident, know where your purse is and don't carry every single personal possession around with you.

I have been to Dublin, hated it and felt very unsafe. Loved Belfast. Otherwise its been a long time since Ive been to a capital city now I think of it. Except Stockholm.

They wont grab your children off you either... lol!!! Stop worrying.. you will be fine!!!

Children? What do you expect these feeelthy furriners to do to your children, ffs? I learnt the Paris Metro at the age of 7 and my children did similarly at 8 and 9. They loved Paris and still do. At no time did I get the vaguest impression that they were about to be sold into slavery or meet any similar fate.
