To think that Mothercare should be called Parentcare?

My Dad whilst visiting the other weekend, as i am pregnant and trying to get all the necessities before d day, was pleasantly surprised by the changes in provision since i was born and ease of access to all sorts of baby equipment. He said something to the effect that wasn't it good what they had for mothers these days. I know he was only trying to be enthusiastic, but it made my blood boil. The nappy bin and cellular blankets are not for me! My husband is equally responsible for the kitting out of our future child. Now every time i see the mothercare brand i see an oldfashioned name reinforcing an out of date concept. Am i being unreasonable? Is this PC gone mad? Or is language an important cultural signifier?

Really? Parentcare? Really?

BooBooGlass · 15/04/2011 19:13

I think you are overthinking. I can't see that men have much need for maternity clothes. MC is shit anyway. Do you also take issue with Superdrug? Because really, most drugs (so they'd have us believe) aren't super. It's just a name

yousankmybattleship · 15/04/2011 19:14

Parentorcarercare surely!

grovel · 15/04/2011 19:14

YABU.

SecretNutellaFix · 15/04/2011 19:16

HaHa 1/10

the company has been around for 50 years.

I seriously doubt a huge name change/ ethos change will ever be on the cards.

If you think Mothercare should change it's name, how about Mumsnet, Netmums, JoJoMamanBebe?

I think you might need to tackle your Dad over the assumption that mothers do most of the childcare/ deciding what equipment to get. Oh, hang on. Isn't it usually the case that Mum does make more decisions than the Dad?

superv1xen · 15/04/2011 19:16

i agree op!! as if its the mother thats responsible for getting and doing everything for the baby or child.

BooBooGlass · 15/04/2011 19:17

What about Kiddicare then supervixen? Do we assume the poor little buggers are responsible for buyign their own cots? It's a NAME

AngryGnome · 15/04/2011 19:19

SpotsMumSally · 15/04/2011 19:25

If it was changed to anything it should be Wedon'tcare. They don't honestly give a toss about any of their customers.

LaWeasel · 15/04/2011 19:25

You realise this is a really old company, and that it costs a lot to rebrand?

Should Boots change it's name to Drugs just so we're culturally clear on what we go there for?

SecretNutellaFix · 15/04/2011 19:27

Or Sainsbury's as the Sainsbury family no longer own, run and work in the shops?

hocuspontas · 15/04/2011 19:30

I just wish Boots would change its name to Boot's. Then I could relax more in the High Street. Grin

PinkIsMyFavouriteCrayon · 15/04/2011 19:31

To be fair to OP, I although I never thought that hard about Mothercare, I fucking HATE "That's why mums go to Iceland". Why is it the Mum that does the shopping?

While it's annoying it isn't as bad as Iceland;

"That's why MUMS go to Iceland".

It's more of a shit hole than Mothercare.

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 15/04/2011 19:46

And the fact that Topshop sells trousers as well as tops is outrageous.

LadyOfTheManor · 15/04/2011 19:47

Grin ha ha...I wasn't aware women were allowed to WEAR trousers.

hocuspontas · 15/04/2011 19:48

And Miss Selfridge needs hauling into the 21st century by changing to Ms Selfridge.

dontcallmepeanut · 15/04/2011 22:34

Surely it should be LegalGuardianCare?

And Iceland... They don't just sell ice, you know... (Not that I've ever been in there... Grin)

SolarPanel · 15/04/2011 22:57

YANBU to think it's a sexist and outdated name.

I'd go for Ridiculous£4.95DeliveryChargeWeWillFleeceYouAndWeDon'tCare

grovel · 15/04/2011 23:04

OK, so DH goes into Mothercare and makes the decisions. We're thrilled to bits, aren't we? FFS.

Honeydragon · 15/04/2011 23:06

them big old maternity pads they sell, you know, the huge absorbent one to stop the horrors from your fanjo escaping and ruining your trousers, and the nipple shields and boob creams and the breast pumps and disposable knickers. Will they stop selling them when it becomes

we'reTotallyRightOnParent/Carer/passingKumquatCare

or have I missed something and those products aren't solely marketed at Mums?

Honeydragon · 15/04/2011 23:08

Oh and technically the nappy bin is for you, the baby won't give a toss what you do with its crap Grin

twirlymum · 15/04/2011 23:25

What about Superdrug? They're not all super.
