To take my 2 dc's to London for the Royal wedding celebrations?

I'm not asking for opinions on the rights or wrongs of the wedding thank you, as I see it as a part of history that I would love to attend with my family.
I'm however becoming increasingly worried about the terrorist threat, and also the planned anti-royal demonstrations, I am of a mind that if we don't go because of them , then they have won already? but obviously don't want to put my kids in danger.
What do you think?

My husband wants to go for the same reasons as you (part of history etc), I"m not too keen because of the crowds/potential trouble, but I'm coming around. I just want to keep my two safe! Good tips on marking a meeting point on a map and taking lots of snacks. Personally I would stay home, watch the telly and have a tea party, but apparently I won't get the 'atmosphere' there.

we are going in a very tongue in cheek kinda way....dressing up etc

dd wants to camp out night before down the mall......that would be good, but cant really, young dc at home to organise

headfairy · 15/04/2011 23:26

ooh midnightexpress I didn't see Ron and Nancy The fireworks were excellent though :o

brimfull · 15/04/2011 23:29

what time is the wedding?

MrsDaffodill · 15/04/2011 23:44

Actually, yes, I think what Mandy2003 is saying is worth noting. Make sure you know how to get out of London on foot/by tube/by overground. Could all get a bit haywire.

We got tickets to Live8 and knowing how to get to the nearest overground (as opposed to tube) was a godsend when it all over-ran, tipped into end of tube time, stations were shut, etc.

Obviously the wedding won't run that late, but tube stations do have an annoying habit of being shut when over-crowded, etc. If you know where you can walk to it really helps.

In fact, last London trip for us was to Bethnal Green. Someone vandalised a tube train and so the whole central suddenly line shut down. Bus stops were therefore mobbed. We walked to Bethnal Green overground and were the only people on the platform and in Liverpool Street within minutes! It was a ten minute walk, I think, down a funny little side street but way better than any of the alternatives. And you can get anywhere from Liverpool Street.

Likewise, for the Queen's Jubilee we got a train into City Thameslink and were again almost alone despite the heaving crowds outside. (In fact, I think there were even toilets there....).

Worth a bit of map and journey printing from tfl.gov.uk in advance of the big day....

GO!!!

I live in London...and terrorist threats don't worry me at all. We just get on with things down here...in spite of some of the atrocities.

The Royal Wedding will be a great spectacle for your little ones...get them a flag and let them watch all the horses and soldiers and see the golden carriage..and make a day of it for them.

BUT get here early....it's going to be packed.

SurreyDad · 16/04/2011 11:29

Just be warned you will bve queuing for hours to get on the train back home.

MsVelvet · 16/04/2011 11:44

I live in London and i couldnt think of anything worse than to stand with thousands of people where the chances are your kids wont see anything as there will be many people in front of you. just to be able to walk from a to b will be a nightmare and the public transport will be screwed too, also finding a toilet if you need one i would say forget it, a kids nightmare. If you watch it on TV at least you will get to see it. If you go, good luck but you must be bonkers :o

charlieandlola · 16/04/2011 11:48

We are taking our dc to London to stay with friends who live in Pimlico, so walking distance to the Mall.
We wouldn't do it if we didn't have somewhere v central to stay.
William will be king for much of their lives, and they are at the age when they will hopefully remember it for a long time.
We have flags and ear defenders, and are sharpening our elbows in preparation.
Terrorists? Shmerrorists. If your time is up, your time is up.

expatinscotland · 16/04/2011 11:51

It's your business what you do. But for me, I can't think of worse than a big crowd on a warm day. I'm WAY too claustrophobic for that.

Prefer watching it in the comfort of home with something cold to drink, but we won't be watching at home.

expatinscotland · 16/04/2011 11:52

'William will be king for much of their lives,'

Not if his gran and father live as long as the Queen Mum.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/04/2011 11:55

Definitely go. If you dont because of the terror threat, the terrorists will have won.

GypsyMoth · 16/04/2011 11:59

expat.....you know something i dont then??? warm you say? not rain then?

expatinscotland · 16/04/2011 12:07

It's always warm in London compared to here! Wink

Nancy66 · 16/04/2011 12:12

Def take a picnic to Hyde Park and watch on the big screen - standing in the crowd, 10 rows back for hours and, then, seeing fuck all will be very tedious indeed

BTW - if you come to London now - go to Hyde Park (the Knightsbridge Barracks end) you will see full on rehearsal every morning at around 10.30am - carriages, marching bands, dressed in all the gear etc....no Wills and Kate but interesting all the same.

hocuspontas · 16/04/2011 12:13

Does anyone know if there are any fireworks the night before? I can't find anything on the schedule.

Merlotmonster · 16/04/2011 13:07

Dont let the fear of 'what if' spoil this special day...you will really regret it.

Gooseberrybushes · 16/04/2011 13:09

hyde park will be fab if you take enough food.. they'll be able to run around, sleep, eat

but what a marathon journey home! no reason not too

vintageteacups · 16/04/2011 13:10

They'll see a whole lot more sat at home watching it on tele.

I think everyone's gone a bit wedding crazy to be honest.

vintageteacups · 16/04/2011 13:18

It really annoyed me that people took small children to the cuts demos the other week. How ridiculous when they knew something could kick off.

Jaquelinehyde · 16/04/2011 13:20

I'm getting hitched the day before just come and watch mine instead it's going to be amazing!!
