genuinely interested in your views on this

my DM and DGPs have bought eater eggs for DS (8 months)

Now would i be a bad mummy if i let DS have a bit of these now and again, or would a bad mummy eat them herself?

I will of course accept them, but havent quite decided yet...

Mumsnet jury - what do you think?

If it helps they are those small milky bar ones.....

My Dad brought round four Easter eggs today. One each for me, DH, ds1 and ds2.

Ds2 is 3 and doesn't understand what they are. Ds1 is on holiday. DH is at work.

So only I know that there are four eggs lurking in my wardrobe.

It would be very bad, wouldn't it, to happen to forget to mention the eggs to anyone and eat them all myself?

springlambkin · 13/04/2011 15:45

I've already eaten my 9 month olds egg Blush

Didn't occur to me to do anything else!.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 13/04/2011 15:48

I get those tiny ones in an egg cup for babies, anyways, yanbu. You are doing him a favour Wink

naturalbaby · 13/04/2011 16:06

ds1 got chocolate easter eggs at 10 months ish and we didn't give him chocolate till he was 12months - think we ate them! my mum gave him an easter book and little toy instead.
am waiting to see what they get this year for my 12week old. i shall claim the lot under the 'breastfeeders need more calories' rule!

stuffthenonsense · 13/04/2011 16:08

no harm in baby having a little, but mummy really does need to test it first.

just wondering though, why do peope give white chocolate to babies? do they think it makes less mess or is better for them? i understood that white chocolate had more sugar in it than milk chocolate? or am i just wrong as ever? (this is my reasoning for eating dark chocolate btw, less sugar and fat)

IgnoringTheChildren · 13/04/2011 16:35

stuffthenonsense - maybe it's because people think that there's caffeine in dark and milk chocolate but not in white chocolate? Although I just googled caffeine in chocolate (always google before you post Wink) and apparently there isn't actually any caffeine in any chocolate unless it's added...

Not only do I eat the Easter eggs I also eat my son's xmas chocolate and party bag chocolate if I can get away with it! He's nearly four now though and unfortunately seems to remember when he's been given chocolate and doesn't believe me when I tell him he's already eaten it! Hmm

funkybuddah · 13/04/2011 17:16

stuffthenonsense Ive always thought the same thing, white chocolate is no different to milk choc so Ive always wondered why people have pitched up with a bag of white buttons as if its the same as feeding them grapes or something.

TabithaTwitchet · 13/04/2011 17:41

Obviously eat them yourself, I'm sure everyone expects you to really.

We ate DD's when she was 4 months, and when she was 16 months too (I rationed out the choc buttons that came with it to her but we had the egg)

I think the following year we all ate some of the egg together after lunch on Easter Sunday, then again the next evening after dinner.

Personally I think something as big as an Easter egg should always be shared out around the whole family, even when children are older.

Melly19MummyToBe · 13/04/2011 18:05

My grandma buys us all easter presents, she's never bought us eggs. Although now we're older she tends to give us all £100 each. Apart from my mum, she always buys my mum an easter egg instead of money. My mum is 51.

Whyriskit · 13/04/2011 18:06

DS1's (and DS2's when I return to work) childminder gave me an Easter egg for each of them yesterday. DS2 is 7 months so I was a bit Shock but maybe I'm being a bit precious. He's not getting any of it. Obviously, I'm breastfeeding so it's mine. DS1 wants to eat his NOW - no idea of delayed gratification these toddlers...

MigGril · 13/04/2011 18:10

DD who was almost 3 last easter got so many eggs there was no way I was letting her have that much chocolate so we shared. We still had chocolate from easter left at christmas. The not so edable chocolate bunny rabit lolies that is.

I didn't let her have chocolate untill she was 12months really no need to feed it to a baby. Will be inyersting to see if IL's get DS any this year as he'll only just be six months the week after easter.

skgnome · 13/04/2011 18:39

It depends on your views on chocolate and babies, presonally I wouldn't, and would eat it (I mean you don't want to waste food)... or maybe just give LO a tiny tiny piece...

Would take a pic of LO and the eggs

sleepyhappymummy · 13/04/2011 19:46

My 4 month old twins were given Easter eggs by a friend, since it's going to be ages til they're even on solids, I've done the right thing & polished them off!

storminabuttercup · 13/04/2011 20:08

IgnoringTheChildren i also did some googling because i remember the lovely James Martin saying something about white chocolate not being real chocolate. apparently its made from cocoa butter so not strictly chocolate. i was always told that choc has caffeine in it though, my ibs flares up if i drink coffee and if i eat loads of chocolate. in the interests of science i would be happy to eat alot of white chocolate and report back.

a few of you have mentioned that you wouldnt give chocolate to a baby, i'm kind of laid back about these things, i figure that he eats all home made food, lots of fresh fruit and veg and has a varied diet so the odd bit of choccie wont hurt. i'm not saying i'd give him loads, but the odd button or so. And Melly £100? For easter? wow! thats alot!

I wouldn't give it to an 8 month old. Eat them. I'm sure your baby wouldn't mind Wink.

Nagoo · 13/04/2011 20:12

It is my duty to eat baby's chocolate eggs.

alicethehorse · 13/04/2011 20:13

I would definitely not give chocolate to an 8 month old and would do the honorable thing and eat them myself!

Last Easter DS was one and a bit. We earnestly discussed whether he should be allowed chocolate, and we decided no. He didn't know what it was so why force it on him? This plan was then totally scuppered - we left one of his stolen-- our eggs out by accident and he managed to shovel quite a bit in before we noticed! ho hum.

Now he's 2, we'll let him have a very small bit.

mousesma · 13/04/2011 20:15

My DD (9 months) will be eating some of her egg and I will be scoffing the rest.
Don't get the white chocolate thing either, my mum's always insisting that its OK to buy DD a chocolate bar if it's a milkybar [sigh].
