To write a letter to this doctor...

because I am so bloody grateful.

My 6mo little ds has had a nasty case of d&v this past week, and I was ultra careful to change his nappies lots more and apply loads of barrier cream, but he still ended up with a nasty rash on his bottom. I was trying so hard to make it better... Lots of nappy free time, cleaning only with water baths etc but it was just getting worse, weeping and raw. Just awful and it got to the point where I was crying at every nappy change Sad

I got in to see the doctor, who straightaway said it was thrush and gave us some canesten. I know she was doing her job, but she was so quick, kind and thoughful. She totally put me at my ease and truly was a credit to her profession. His rash is looking better after only 24 hours and I know it's a bit pfb but I am so utterly grateful

Would it be weird of me to write a letter to thank her for her speedy diagnosis, and her kindness to me and my son? I am 23 and a lot of people make snap judgements when they see me, as with my hair scraped back and wearing my mummy uniform of jeans and tee shirt, I look younger. She was just wonderful.

I think it would be really nice.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 13/04/2011 12:09

Not weird at all. Nice.

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 13/04/2011 12:09

Definitely do this. It makes SUCH a difference to get positive feedback. Every letter/thank you I've ever received is precious.

2littlegreenmonkeys · 13/04/2011 12:10

What a lovely thoughtful thing to do. I would send her a letter or a card of some sort. It is so nice to hear of something so positive.

I hope your DS feels better very soon.

nickelbaalamb · 13/04/2011 12:10

YANBU.

that's a lovely thing to do :)

Bluestocking · 13/04/2011 12:15

Not weird at all. I wrote to a locum GP who happened to be a dermatologist and prescribed some brilliant bath oil and moisturiser which sorted out DS's baby eczema in three days. I happened to see her again and she had my card on the bulletin board in her office!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 13/04/2011 12:16

YANBU. You'd probably make the doc's day :)

CatherineWindsor · 13/04/2011 12:16

Definitely do it, I bet they don't hear it enough Smile

JumpJockey · 13/04/2011 12:27

Please do - dh is a gp and is so pleased to hear from happy patients, since it's usually only the upset ones who get in touch. Also, it will go into the doc's file for her annual appraisal, which helps get good doctors recognised. If you're really enthused you could copy to the practice manager as well. Really glad to hear poor ds's bum is better :)

Punkatheart · 13/04/2011 12:45

I wish more people would do this. That has reminded me to write a letter to the hospital about my wonderful cancer nurse, who seems to be able to read my mind and is so sensitive and empathetic...

Doesn't it make such a difference!

tribpot · 13/04/2011 12:47

Definitely write, I think it would be lovely.

shakey1500 · 13/04/2011 12:53

People are so quick to criticise usually I think it would be a great thing to do. You'll probably make her day :)

exhausted2011 · 13/04/2011 12:56

i'm sure they come in for a lot of flack, so a nice letter would be lovely

Antidote · 13/04/2011 12:57

I can't tell you how lovely it is to get thank you letters for things like this. It will make her day.

I nearly didn't open this thread because I was sure it would be yet another complaint about the poor old nhs. It is great to hear good stories.

farewellfigure · 13/04/2011 14:30

Lovely. I thought this was going to be a complainy thread too so it's great to read such a lovely one.

I rang my doctor to thank him for diagnosing my nighttime cough as asthma a few months ago. It had been going on for ages and after two puffs of the inhaler, it was gone...forever. I was so relieved I cried! Let your doctor know...it'll make her day.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/04/2011 14:33

Do it. When we had to leave the marvellous Dr Gupta's practice, I was nearly in tears. I did write him a note and gave him and the practice a box of chocs.
DH saw him a couple of weeks later (he taught Dr G's son), he said he was really chuffed because most people just want to complain.

iskra · 13/04/2011 14:38

I think it would be lovely too.

JazzieJeff · 13/04/2011 15:02

I will send her a card tomorrow Smile I suppose I just thought she might think it a bit odd for simply diagnosing a bit of thrush on my ds' bum, but I was getting desparate watching it get worse despite my best efforts... I was blown away by her sweetness to us.

Do it!

Too often people dont appreciate good service in whatever field, when people are "just doing their job", but are quick to complian if the reverse is true

To get your "thank you" on a crappy day would mean so much to her!

Bexamundo · 13/04/2011 22:41

As a member of staff for the NHS, I say do it! It's the thank-yous that keep us going :)
