to wonder how my gas bill is soooo high?

Well, I know that fuel prices have risen but I am still in shock.

I pay £60 pm by direct debit. We live in a one bed flat (Box room for DS). We were FREEZING all winter - thermostat lucky if reaches 18. NEver put the hot water on as it is an old boiler so need to heat whole tank so we just use elect shower.

Just got bill which is acually an underestimate as checked actual reading as was so high.

I owe them an extra £250 - will be even more when I give them the reading. They have put the DD up to £90. Friend in a three bed house pays £30 and house is actually warm

What am I doing wrong here? Would not mind so much if flat was actually warm or I was washing my face with hot water but am constantly freezing!

I think it's all to do with what type of boiler you have, I live in 2 bed flat and my heating is on all the time, I pay £28 a month and the gas company owe me £150! Do you rent?

PersonalClown · 12/04/2011 20:31

Blimey.
You sure you haven't got a gas leak somewhere?
I have a 3 bed house, 2 adults, 1 ds and 2 dogs and pay only £16 a month. Just had our yearly review and DD hasn't changed.

How's the insulation etc?

ratspeaker · 12/04/2011 20:44

personal clown £16 seems extremly low for the size of your house

hoops997 · 12/04/2011 20:46

forgot to add I have a combi-bolier, seems to be the most efficent out there.......

Lilyloo · 12/04/2011 20:46

sixteen pound a month wow we pay sixty for 3 bed

dexter73 · 12/04/2011 20:46

ratspeaker - we live in a 3 bed terrace and our gas monthly dd is £12 (gas top trumps!!). Our heating is set to 20C and is on from 6am to 11pm.

dexter73 · 12/04/2011 20:51

Our gas is only for our heating and we have a gas hob. Our water is heated by an electric immersion heater and our electricity bill is £67 a month so this probably compensates for the low gas bill.

PersonalClown · 12/04/2011 20:55

Let's see.
Combi boiler for hot water and central heating.
Cavity wall and loft insulation.
Power shower which we all use except when DP wants to wallow.
Gas cooker used nearly everyday.

Been here nearly 5 years and always around the £15-18 month DD for gas.

My electric is a different matter entirely!Wink

NarcolepsyQueen · 12/04/2011 20:57

Our gas bill for the last quarter was £1200 Shock We are not on mains gas; it is from a tank outside.

flyingspaghettimonster · 12/04/2011 21:11

We have this problem with electricity - it is about $400 a month if we use the air con or heating. We thought someone must be stealing our electricity as the neighbours in the same condos as us were paying a quarter of that, even though our ac unit was newer. Turns out we have a freon leak causing the price rise as we have to work the air con much harder than the others do. Costs too much to get fixed/found though :-( Hope you find the source of your extortionate bill...

LoveLeonardCohen · 12/04/2011 22:20

personal clown can I be nosy? How come your gas is so cheap. We have:
combi boiler (hot water on demand)
gas cooker

2 bed converted victorian terrace (shit insulation at the mo-getting sorted, and those huge draughty sash windows)

Anyhow we were cold all winter, but still careful with heating etc very rarely on all day, now not on at all. We must pay about 35-40 pm average for gas. What's the secret?

annapolly · 12/04/2011 22:24

Four bed town house very well insulated and combi boiler. Gas central heating but electric cooker £1200 PA. I think this is too much.

BelleDameSansMerci · 12/04/2011 22:26

There are lots of older gas meters (apparently) which are faulty. You can request that your supplier checks your meter. I also had a bill wrongly calculated as the bill was calculated the wrong type of unit for what the meter was counting (if that makes sense). It made a huge difference when they corrected it.

Having said all that, my gas bill was £760 for a three bedroom house (admittedly old and cold) and it was actually cheaper than for this quarter last year...

Really do suggest you get that meter checked out...

ABitBatty · 12/04/2011 22:38

£12 per month - £2.76 per week, on 6am-11pm? That can't be right surely?

dexter73 · 13/04/2011 11:02

It is right ABitBatty - our bill only came a few weeks ago and I can read! We live in a terraced house and have good insulation so maybe that is why it is so low.

TitsMcGee89 · 13/04/2011 11:07

Its our first time renting, and were paying £70 per month for gas and electric with eon, does this sound reasonable? 2 bedrooomed terrace house, working coulple.

GKlimt · 13/04/2011 11:10

Agree about insulation, faulty meters etc

My gas dd has fallen from £47/month to £19/month by changing suppliers.

QueenStromba · 13/04/2011 11:11

4 bed ground floor maisonette gas central heating and water but not cooker. Our bill averages out to less than £20 a month and most of that is the coldest 3-4 months (£180 for September to March, about a fiver a month from April to October).

susansocks · 13/04/2011 11:12

we pay £100 per month, roughly, give or take both both gas and elec.
3 bd house
gch
elec cooker

YouaretooniceNOT · 13/04/2011 12:17

I pay Scottish Power for gas via a pre-payment meter. In Winter, i pay about £30.00 per 7 days. The central heating is on for about 16 hours per day. Still freezing though.

QueenStromba · 13/04/2011 12:58

YouaretooniceNOT: A perfect experiment for you would be to try lowering your heating a little bit and leaving it on constantly for 24 hours - you'll be able to see straight away if it's cheaper than letting the system cool down and having to heat it all up again. My guess is you'll have a warmer house and pay the same if not less than just having the heating on for 16 hours.

YouaretooniceNOT · 13/04/2011 13:25

Yes, i know but the heating system and gurgles all through the night and i cannot sleep, so i have to switch it off! I AM having it repaired before next Winter! Thank you.
