To not know what to do with the GIANT goldfish in my kitchen?

It was bought over a year ago as a pet for DD....it was bought a proper tank and filter and we followed the advice of the pet shop with regards everything....now it is bloody massive and looks cramped in its tank...the tank is 13 inches across and the fish is over 5 or 6 inches....it has a voracious appetite and throws itself aroud to attract attention when it's hungry.

Tbh it's bloody creepy. Like jaws living alongside us.

DH feeds it peas now and then and he gave it a prawn once which made it almost faint in excitement. It's cannabalistic and I don't ike the look of it!

I cannot afford 70 quid for a new tank....which is what they cost new...and I have been looking on Ebay and Frecycle for weeks now wih no luck. Ebay ones that are big enough are also more than I can afford.

I am hoping some neighbour might have a pond I can re-home him in...but any other ideas?

tempura or beer batter it

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/04/2011 12:40

keep it in the bath?

KatishaVinganegg · 12/04/2011 12:41

TAke it back to the shop?

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 12/04/2011 12:42

I might just do that curly. Plenty of meat on him!

I wonder if the shop would have him? Good idea Katisha!

not sure how true it is but my dad who keeps fish says they will only grow to the size of the space they're in IYSWIM, so it should eventually stop and not outgrow the tank

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 12/04/2011 12:48

Well on a fish forum it said they must have reasonable space or they will die a painful death...

eek that doesn't sound good

someone with a pond might be the best idea then

Crawling · 12/04/2011 12:52

Thier outside stops growing but the organs continue which will kill them eventually, (I think I am not certain though) could your dp look up how to make one and then buy some glass. My dad used to make our aquariums, but he was good at that sort of thing.

FruitShootsChocolateThieves · 12/04/2011 12:56

Are you anywhere near Suffolk? You could put it in my pond..it wouldn't be fed anymore prawns though but could have a nibble of the spaniel when he jumps in!

scaryteacher · 12/04/2011 13:00

A cat might get it.....I found a goldfish in my sitting room, no bloody idea how it got there, apart from the cat who was looking very self satisfied. No-one has a pond near here, so either it was dropped by a bird, or he has been visiting houses with open doors and fish tanks.

hephaestus · 12/04/2011 13:02

Please find him/her a pond. A properly cared for single-tailed goldfish will grow to 12"+ long and live for 20+ years - they are not suitable for aquariums!

MrSpoc · 12/04/2011 13:02

Are you sure it is a goldfish? May the pet shop has sold you a red bellied parahna? Why dont you let it go in a local lake or cannal?

FruitShootsChocolateThieves · 12/04/2011 13:05

I can see the headlines if a Piranha was set free in a local lake

"Lake Sealed off after Beloved Pet Savagely Mauled By Fish"

Crawling · 12/04/2011 13:06

Hephestus that depends on the size of aquarium some of ours were as big as ponds but you do need a big aquarium and that is usually expensive and takes alot of space.

MrSpoc · 12/04/2011 13:10

They found a Piranha in a lake near me a few years back (it was already dead) but they are not sure how or why.

Also a few years before thagt in Warrington a tropical fish shop closed down and they released all their stock into the brodgewater cannal. People were catch all sorts or weird and wonderful fish. They only servived becasue an old mill used to use the cannal's water to cool down their machines and put the warm water back into the cannal.

bemybebe · 12/04/2011 13:12

Take it to a garden center with a pet shop. They will be delighted to take this size fish off your hands. Not sure if they will pay for it though.

peeriebear · 12/04/2011 13:15

There are several goldfish in our river, it's very shallow and clean and they can be easily spotted in the shoals of roach :) They seem to be quite happy, though I wouldn't recommend it as they are sitting ducks for heron. Ask around for local ponds- where are you? Does your local garden centre or park have an ornamental pond?

Jude89 · 12/04/2011 13:21

down the toilet?

hephaestus · 12/04/2011 13:25

Exactly, Crawling, the size you need is usually well beyond the expectations/capability of people bringing home a 1" fairground fish - easier all round to just shout 'pond!'

Please don't release it into a watercourse, you don't know what kind of diseases it may be carrying and there's plenty of examples of a handful of introduced species decimating native ecosystems (okay, unlikely with a goldfish in the UK but at best it'll be a glowing orange target for a heron).

Stick an advert in the local paper/Preloved etc. saying free to a pond home, someone will come and take it off your hands.

culturemulcher · 12/04/2011 13:28

Put it up for Extra film and tv work - make it earn its keep

SpiderObsession · 12/04/2011 13:30

I've just laughed myself silly. Peas + prawn crackers! Fab.

MrSpoc · 12/04/2011 13:38

Peas are very good for sick goldfish (when u have a fish upside down) it cleans out their bowl somehow.

There are loads of wild gold fish in our water course and also golden Orfs. (they do well against comerants, kingfishers and heron's but hephaestus is right about introducing diseases.

Crawling · 12/04/2011 13:43

I agree with putting up a add if you cant meet its needs it need to go to someone who can, I think one goldfish needs 100 litres I could be wrong but if I am right you need something this big if you cannot provide this then do as hephaestus suggests and re-home.

westerngirl · 12/04/2011 14:07

How about a baby bath or similar sized receptacle? You wouldn't have filter though and would have to completely clean it out manually and change H2O every week.

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 12/04/2011 15:02

fruitshoots thank you but we're in Cheshire! He would have enjoyed spaniel too!

Spider...not prawn crackers! Grin prawns! Fresh ones too. Hmm at DH's extravagence!

I think I will stick him in a BIG pickle jar and abandon him on the Cathedral steps...they have a lovely pond full of fish.

[joking btw]

Western I simply refuse to have a baby bath with a blody great fishy in it...where would I put it?
