More would it be unethical - Cake decorating for school

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 11/04/2011 18:01

I have to make cakes for a school party.

I make great fairy cakes

I cannot decorate fairy cakes for toffee

Would I be unreasonable to decorate them and pretend littlemad had done it?

It would be the only way I could possibly avoid the derision of the uber-mummies at school....

Great minds cookie....!

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 11/04/2011 21:19

ok, I'm doing some red some white and some blue glace icing with red white and blue sprinkles on top.

I think they are going to look better in my head than as an end result.

i can make buttercream but it is gopping.

If they don't look utterly rubbish I'll post a pic on my profile tomorrow.

melt chocolate and dob it on top of the cake - its the only way I can decorate a fairy cake and it works.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 11/04/2011 21:23

ummm it's not my buttercream that's gopping, just the whole buttercream thing, mine is just as good as anyones Grin

Why not just let the child decorate them anyway? No need for a lie.

shivanjali · 11/04/2011 22:52

You can also use fondant icing (will be in bakery section usually with marzipan) either roll it yourself or get ready rolled and cut out circles using anything the size of your cakes. Stick them on cake with buttercream or apricot jam. Get some smaller decorations or sprinkles to put on top (stick with jam or ideally sugar glue as this is clear).

Good luck, decorations are one thing but for me it is always about the taste !

They will look great! Look forward to the pics.

Last time I needed to do cakes for school, I bought those little chocolate muffins from Waitrose, a tub of chocolate icing and a packet of those silver ball things.

Slapped it all together, total prep maybe 5 minutes. Done.

DioneTheDiabolist · 12/04/2011 00:36

Bake them and let LittleMad decorate them. That way she gets to have fun and you get to tell the truth (she might surprise you). Result!

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 12/04/2011 06:40

I have to say it's a bit of a relief that I'm not alone in my dislike of cake decorating. I will post pics and I do know the kids will love them.

The reason I won't actually let littlemad do them at the moment is that he has the sickness bug of doom and I just don't want to pass that to any other kids.

Don't you just put them in the hall at some stage during the day and by the time of the cake sale nobody knows whose cakes they were anyway? Put them on a paper plate and no-one need ever know. Wouldn't worry about it though. I got far more cred from sending in a fiver for the proceeds!

Has anyone said edible glitter yet? Instant chic. Just smoosh over plenty of cream cheese icing/buttercream and sprinkle on glitter. Voila! Envy of all.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 12/04/2011 10:59

thanks for all the encouragement.

Thanks expecially for the tip about the knife in hot water which is going on my list of things to remember :)

Ive put a pic on my profile so you can all point and laugh now if you wish.

They look luffly. Can I have one? Ta.

Pennies · 12/04/2011 11:35

BlooferLady beat me to it. Go to your local cake decorating shop get a few tubes of Wilton ready made icing in the colours you want plus some edible glitter and you'll knock the ubers nicely into touch.
