AIBU?

to wonder why it seems to be acceptable to be so negative about people from the North?

Every day on here I see references to people from the North being less educated, less literate, less fashionable and so on.

How is that acceptable?

There are so many sweeping generalisations going on.

It's ignorant and it winds me up

This is what we are reduced to with all this pc crap
We dont want to be called racists/bigots etc so the only people to bash is the people of this country who live in far off backward places

Mike - how is the "North" a far off, backward place?

Ha! That's quite funny diablo because the people I am thinking of do treat theis youn amn (he is a doctor) like Prince Charles, and they don't hold his supposed poshness and education against him (actually they are a bit in awe of it) but they give his poor GF a really hard time for being up herself!

On reading this thread and the supermarket thread I've decided I'm more akin to the Northerners

I live in a rather beautiful part of Wales. I'd much rather live in Surrey but dh's job prevents us from doing so.

My mother's family is originally from Manchester, my mother moved to London as soon as she could. I prefer the Southern accent to the Northern if I'm honest. But I live in Wales (not from nor staying forever) who am I to comment?!

I did get some of the "up yourself" crap, but not from family.

How awful that we can't all be treated like people, no matter what our background, education, location and choices in life. Surely it really only matters if you are "nice" or "not nice".

Tis all bollocks LOTM. Folks is folks. You find your 'type' anywhere, north or south, based on like-mindedness - not accidents of birth or geography.

Fellatio, if I'm honest I probably wouldn't befriend someone from Liverpool as they talk so fast I just don't understand what they're saying...Blush

Am another living in Wales but will happily stay forever if we cannot get to where our friends are (Devon). Is a gorgeous place to be, a beautiful village in particular, if somewhat posher than I am Grin

And I hail from Somerset, crappy part of, so don;t fit any posh south / bad north stereotype. bridgwater always gets a mention on the crap town threads, hey ho.

most people on Mn are Londoners / Home COunties types though, just the way it is. And of course fols is folks, stereotypes are silly.

Mike - is your RL name Philip? Are you married to the Queen?

Hmm

I've definitely been subjected to a lot of Southerner-bashing/ teasing over the years.

I'd like to see a Northern bloke give birth without pain relief, like this 'soft' Southerner has - twice.

Hmm Grin

I've read the first and the last. No, MNetters don't all live in London, I regularly feel like the only person on there who does live in London. The DH, from the North, is a bit of an unsophisticated thicko who bankrolls us to live in South West London having taken a first from a prestigious university, married a posh bird and made a very good reputation from himself. When I feel up to it, I wipe the coal dust from his brow before I kiss him night night Grin.

Ormirian - Somerset is gorgeous. My MIL and FIL used to live Priddy and then Wells. I would seriously love to live there.

I'd love to say you're wrong about people from Liverpool talking too fast but you are sadly correct.
I have a dear, dear friend who is from deepest darkest Liverpool, whereas I am a woollyback Grin When we chat she has to slow down and I have to speed up Grin
I detest the preconceptions people have about Liverpool though. This friend lives in a massive house that's worth nearly £1m and is very stylish and she isn't even married to a footballer. I wish people didn't believe the stereotypes Sad

It's grim up north (where we live, Mancs are southern jessies).

I blame it all the southerners though. Of which I am one, according to the people up here. Except that my parents were from even further north than here.

Go figure.
