To think it would be almost impossible to do a family shop in Waitrose for £50

Mum in the playground (who is a bit boastful) was proudly telling us all today that she does the weekly shop for all her family (2 adults and 4 children) at Waitrose and only spends £50. One of the other Mums asked her if that was everything and she said yes.

AIBU to be a bit Hmm

Flossie - the quantities arent' really that great for a lad who has grown more than a foot in the last five years, plays at least two hard games of rugby a week and trains five times a week! I can remember having two packets of crisps and a glass of milk when I came in from school 40 years ago and I'm pretty sure that what comprised two packets then is about the same as 6 packets now. BTW we don't live on crisps and when they're gone, they're gone.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 21/10/2011 12:28

marriedinwhite £150-200! Shock Bloody hell that's a lot. Do you buy loads of branded stuff?

I'm going to do a compare shop on moneysupermarket.com - I really do think that Sainsbury's has gone up so much recently that I may as well shop at Waitrose at get better quality meat, and get any branded stuff at tesco prices.

tbh - the Asda online shope I did last week has saved me a fortune..

JarethTheGoblinKing · 21/10/2011 12:30

Bollocks, I meant www2.mysupermarket.co.uk/

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 21/10/2011 12:34

Ahh, I'll have two in a couple of years - Now I know what to expect! (my eldest eats like a horse now) With you on the crisps, mostly air nowadays, especially in the multipacks.

hardboiledpossum · 21/10/2011 12:45

I don't know how people do it. I mainly shop at waitrose as it's just round the corner and my weekly shop comes to about £80 just including food stuff for two adults and a baby. I meal plan and don't eat loads of meat. An average week of dinners would probably be;
mon- chili
tue- beef stir fry
wed- homemade pizza
thurs- bangers, mash and onion gravy
fri- beef stew
sat- veg thai curry
sun- roast

I wish my weekly shop did come to £50

Dirtydishesmakemesad · 21/10/2011 12:49

I have 2 adults 4 children and spend around 60 in tesco but when we used to live near a waitrose and went there it would skyrocket.

pigletmania · 21/10/2011 12:50

Impossible imo

JarethTheGoblinKing · 21/10/2011 12:56

Weird.. I've just done a comparison for a typical shop, Asda cheapest, Waitrose next, Tesco and Sainsbury's at the bottom! Difference of over £13! Quite surprised tbh.

LaWeasel · 21/10/2011 12:58

I'm sure you could do it, we have shopped on a budget at waitrose loads of times and it's not that bad. But for 2 adults and 4 children... I can't imagine it being that exciting a meal plan!

Chestnutx3 · 21/10/2011 13:20

I always wonder doesn't ever eat lunch or breakfast. I could do 5/7 dinners a week at £50 but what about breakfast & lunch, snacks, nappies (aldi ones gave DS nappy rash) etc...

PattySimcox · 21/10/2011 13:27

Breakfast and lunch are ususally pretty cheap IME - porridge with a spoonfull of cocoa is my DCs fave - porridge is only £1 a big bag.

Lunches usually sandwich, drink, fruit and a biscuit (doubled for 13yo DS)

marriedinwhite · 21/10/2011 13:33

Jareth - what's typical

Chestnutx3 · 21/10/2011 13:40

Oh porridge on MN is like feeding the 10,000 with one small chicken. All of us hate porridge and I hate sandwiches that must be where I am going wrong. Also we like to have different breakfasts/lunches every day.

LucilleBallbag · 21/10/2011 13:42

i couldn't manage this at any shop tbh
we are 2 adults, one child in nappies, one still in night nappies, and a greedy guts cat. our supermarket bill plus milkman bill is approx £100pw. we don't scrimp, but neither do we eat like kings on that, and I cook most foods from scratch.

I am sure that those who feed families of 12 on 15p a week or whatever they claim are missing some things off, whether it's toiletries/pet food/lunches bought at work/school dinners/milkman bill, or forgetting that the last time they went to the corner shop they spent a tenner.

LaWeasel · 21/10/2011 13:53

Cereal's not that expensive though is it? 6 people over 7 days need 42 portions of cereal.

2 packs of essentials corn flakes: 2.36 (32 portions)
pack of essentials museli: 1.36 (11 portions)
10 pints of milk: 1.25 + 1.85: 3.10

breakfast: 6.82.

LaWeasel · 21/10/2011 13:55

You'd be really hungry by lunch though...

OhdearNigel · 21/10/2011 14:00

With a large chicken, a packet of mince (often on special offer) and a selection of pasta, pulses, potatoes and self control she could definitely do a £50 weekly shop particularly if she bakes from scratch. She may well have a vegetable garden/allotment for fruit/veg/herbs - this makes a big impact on our shopping costs.
Waitrose isn't as expensive as people think, it's not all £3.99 Heston Blumenthal smoked salt

witchyhills · 21/10/2011 14:03

this thread was from April !!
If you get the basics from Waitrose, it's probably do-able. But I can't resist putting all the nice stuff in, so ends up costing a fortune

LaWeasel · 21/10/2011 14:05

oh! oops.

creepypantsandzombierags · 21/10/2011 14:36

I could do it if it was just food for that many. Unfortunately our weekly grocery bill gets bumped up by DD1's night time pull-ups, DD2's nappies and DH's coffee habit.

cathers · 21/10/2011 15:17

Reckon dinners for 7 nights is doable for £50, but by the time I add in breakfast, lunches, puds, nappies/wipes, wine, soft drinks/ hot drinks, toiletries, cleaning products, it totals in at more like £90.
IMO, she's talking about main meals only.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 21/10/2011 15:25

Fucking zombie threads Wink

NinkyNonker · 21/10/2011 17:23

We do porridge or museli for breakfast so cheap and nutritious. We don't really stick to a budget, that is just what it works out at on average.

mumblechum1 · 21/10/2011 17:25

I just nipped into Wrose on way home. £53 got me two bottles of wine, four bars of chocolate, a baguette and some salad.

Oh and two fishcakes.

How tf can £50 possibly do a family for a week?

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 21/10/2011 17:41

Two bottles for a tenner, Mumblechum?!? Can't go wrong, eh.
