My car was stolen today. When I was on the phone to the police, the operator mentioned their "recovery policy" in respect of stolen cars - basically, if your stolen car is reported abandoned / in an accident / etc, and the police recover it to their garage, they will carry out "Scenes Of Crimes" proceedures, ie fingerprinting, looking for evidence - however, I would be charged for the costs of recovery (£150). I was asked if I was fully comp, because I could claim this back - no, my car is worth about £350
- ok then, a cheaper option is that the police phone me when my car is found, and I go get it myself - but no evidence gathering will be carried out!
I used to work for the police, and so I know that getting evidence off of a car is very difficult - however, AIBU to be a bit surprised and shocked that basically they only investigate your crime if you pay for it?! I know there are much worse things that can happen, it is only a car, and so on - but still!
