To not want to work unpaid this afternoon?

Whinge whinge whine...

I am a student nurse. A large part of the course obviously involves working on a hospital ward. Although I get a small bursary, I don't technically get paid. And it means that I get "paid" exactly the same amount while sitting on my arse watching jeremy kyle studying as I do working full time on a very busy ward.

"Proper" staff get paid extra for working weekends. I don't. I worked yesterday too. And it's sunny. I don't want to go.

Sulk.

Ignore all the miseries with no sense of humour! I'm a sister and have been looking wistfully out of the window all day. Obviously I'm a crap nurse who needs to find another job! The patients seem to quite like me though Grin

You get a bursary, no tuition fees so you're not paying for your training, most likely guaranteed a job when you finish your training.

I have alot of friends who are nurses, once you qualify, the NHS is a VERY good employer. 7 weeks holiday per year and bank holidays on top of that, they have good pay scales when you climb the ladder. One of my friends is an intensive care nurse on £40,000 p.a.

Guaranteed a job? That was what I thought when I left my (well paid) job to do nurse training - sadly it's definitely not the case Sad.

YANBU to not want to work- but you ABU to do something about it i.e contemplate not going in. You chose nursing-hopefully because you wanted to take care of people. I don't suppose they wanted to be ill on a sunny day any more than you want to be there. But you signed up for this. If it's not what you want and you can't accept it with grace then it's probably not the right profession for you. And by the way- you are not working unpaid if you are on a bursary. You are being paid in a different way.
Thank your lucky stars you live in a country where you can get a good education- there are many, many children in other countries walking miles to school each day just for a rudimentary schooling. You sound like an 'I'm entitled', lazy Miss to me'!

YABU. You are not unpaid. You get a bursary and your course fees paid. You are doing the shift as part of your training - not as extra hours on top! You had your days off during the week - did you whinge whinge whinge about that?

Students on non-NHS funded courses are working in McDonalds and the like today to make ends meet. You are privileged to be on the course. I hope you realise that!
