in wanting to take my kids to a festival?

They would be 1, 4 and 6 in the summer. And we're thinking of the Green Man Festival. We are used to camping - although haven't been with the baby yet. We are used to festivals - although that was when we were young and carefree.

So, would we be unreasonable in going this summer? Or should we wait until they are older?

This year's Glastonbury sold out last Autumn!

MrsGravy · 07/04/2011 21:49

Thanks again everyone. Definitely not planning on getting trashed Selks!!! I can't think of anything worse than looking after kids while being under the influence.

It all sounds very doable. I'm quite excited at the idea now!

no not unreasonable
go, we have taken dd since she was little,
be prepared, take a sturdy trolley and don't expect to see all you would if not with children, of course
have fun

Have you thought about going to the Croissant Neuf festival? If you can get to Green Man then it's in the same kind of area.

www.partyneuf.co.uk

It's very peaceful and family friendly but there are still lots of bands and a big late night bar.
I convinced my sister to come last year - her first festival in years and now with 1yr old, 4yr old and 17yr old in tow, and she loved it. Can't wait to go back. It's the kind of place where you don't panic if the kids wander off - they are probab;y off with new friends or making some thing in a workshop.
And it's all solar powered!

CurrySpice · 07/04/2011 21:55

Shame :(

It gave me so much confidence to camp with the kids without worrying. Loved it (apart from DD1 being so poorly natch)

The image of Foxy yomping up to my tent with a bottle of bubbly will live with me a long time :o

BoattoBolivia · 07/04/2011 21:55

We've been to Larmertreefestival every year since dd was 3, she'll be 9 this year. She absloutely loves it. It's really small and very, very family friendly. Lots of music that I've never heard of, but always something new I love, loads of kids stuff and lots of adult creative stuff as well. Went last year with 4 month old ds, which was much harder work, but still great. It's near Shaftesbury, if that is near enough to you.

toeragsnotriches · 07/04/2011 21:55

No but having never been in the Kid's Field before last year I was totally bowled over at the amount and quality of the stuff on offer. Tbh, we pretty much stuck to the Green Fields, the theatre bit and the Kid's Field and took it in turns to watch bands. But that's just what suited us... Good luck and enjoy!

DiscoTex · 07/04/2011 21:57

We have been to the Greenman festival for the last two years, it's a brilliant family festival. Unfortunately it was a mud fest last year, which is hard when 6 months pg!!

If I were you I would look at a very hardy pushchair or even better a little pull around trailer for your youngest as the site has a few slopes and can get quite muddy - we saw lots of people struggling with normal pushchairs.

There is a family camping field which is good, but last year seemed to get really full of 'non-families' which is the prerogative I suppose, but it meant that the family section was already full by Thursday morning, which is ridiculous! So you might want to get there even earlier to secure yourself a good plot - I think you can buy a camping ticket from the Monday before the festival?

If possible definitely go in a 'Live In' vehicle. You get to drive straight down and can also pitch a tent next to the vehicle - much less hassle, and bizarrely, nearer to the toilets and showers!! We saw people just drive on in standard 4WD or vans and then erect tents next to them - I was as jealous as a jealous thing!!

The last thing I can think of is that they don't actually search your bags when going into the main arena, so don't worry about ferrying booze in and out.

Last thing - if you are camping, take a sack truck and lots of bags with wheels to make ferrying to the campsite easier.

Good luck!!
x

their prerogative

npin · 07/04/2011 22:01

Last yeat took our dd then 3 to Green Man and Boom Town Fair. We had an excellent time, This year we are going to Beautiful Days, can't wait.
Think there is a resale of Glastonbury tickets for this year on 17th April, but you need to be registered to buy them. I've been to Glastonbury 11 times pre-dd and huband still goes. I wouldn't take dd yet though, the site is too big for her.

worldsapart · 07/04/2011 22:04

went to Kendal Calling last year, was 7 months pg.

loads of families, children, babies.

Can't wait to take dd to another festival!

npin · 07/04/2011 22:06

Just checked you've got until tomorrow to register for this years Glastonbury, then ticket resale is on 17th april

karen2010 · 07/04/2011 22:18

toeragsnotriches
there is no glasto next year

I know someone who works at storyteller and she has done loads of festivals
but not glasto as they dont pay their children entertainers .

toeragsnotriches · 08/04/2011 07:24

Oh well thats good to know! Will have to get my long term planning hat on!

Artichokes · 08/04/2011 07:31

Last year I took my 18 mother and my 3 year old to Latitude. They had the time of their lives. There were no problems in taking the baby. In fact she was least worry as she was too slow to run away and get lost in the crowds. We are going again this year.

ninah · 08/04/2011 07:34

I am going to green man again this year with my dc, had a fab time last year, there were people with children of all ages. And yes, it's still by sugar loaf mountain in the brecons. I'd thoroughly recommend buying the holiday ticket as well and having a few days to settle in and explore the surroundings.
curry I did cornbury last year, did you catch buddy guy? there was some good childrens stuff too. The venue is changing this year to a larger field but in the same area. It is a fairly sedate festival, small enough to wander round without getting lost, and finishes early each evening. Would not be my first choice tbh but is great if you are nervous about going with dc.

Artichokes · 08/04/2011 07:36

My post shld read 18 "monther"

ninah · 08/04/2011 07:43

the other thing about cornbury is that it's early on in the season so if you liked it you could book something else
lots overlap school term which is a pita
my friend is also going to try the deer shed in n yorks which has plenty of children's stuff, it started last year

RustyBear · 08/04/2011 07:43

D0G - for a family friendly festival in the southwest, how about Beautiful Days? at Ottery St Mary near Exeter?

DD has been going for several years now and (though she doesn't have any children) says it's the best, happiest atmosphere of any she's been to, with lots of stuff going on for children and a family camp.

becknotts · 08/04/2011 08:17

Green Man is fantastic , tonnes of kids and loads of things for them to do, love seeing them playing in all the bubbles.

Met my DP there 6 years ago, so sad this will be my first year not going, our first baby is due at end of June so taking a newborn is probably pushing it ( it was the first thing I thought of when I got my EDD) . Definitely going next year

Weather was fine last year but it does like to rain in the welsh mountains so take waterproofs

missmiss · 08/04/2011 08:27

My mum and her friend took us (me, brother, friend's son and daughter) to Womad [hippy emoticon] when we were 11, 10 and 9. It was FANTASTIC. a nice man towed us along on his canoe Grin

Tiredtrout · 08/04/2011 08:47

I take my kids to camp bestival each year. They love it and will try all sorts of things there. Lots of things for kids to do and a really good line up
