Singing to Babies

DD (4 months) was grumping ( we call her the ginger grumper, i'm sure she will love it when she gets older) so I broke out in song to sooth her, nothing wrong so far but the first song that came into my head was Russ Abott's 'I Love a Party With a Happy Atmosphere' a song that I haven't heard for years and quite frankly should never have been sung after 1986.

AIBU to sing Russ Abbot to a 4 month old baby? Shock

Thank God its not just me!

Hands Up, complete with movements has gone down well so far.I even YouTubed it! DS also gets renditions of Close to You, and Bring Me Sunshine

Will definitely be using Wiggle/Stinky baby (Love Single Ladies especially since seeing Stephen Gately do it live in concert - it was so fab!)

Our DD gets to listen to Queens of the Stone Age, Muse, and Elbow quite frequently. There aren't that many lyrics appropriate for a 7 month old. Singing to her is usually either "Twinkle Twinkle little star" because she does a little hand gesture to that now, or "The Ladies of the Harem of the Court of King Caractacus" in its entirety to stop her bawling.

my daughter adores GOk Wan.. will quite happily go to sleep listening to his voice... we also sing alot of Glee music!

SmethwickBelle · 07/09/2011 22:53

You'll sing worse before they're a year old. I sing constantly, and DS1 has started doing the same substituting the words poo and bum for various lyrics along the way.

madmomma · 07/09/2011 23:05

haha 'atmosphere' is a brilliant song for babies. Personally I like 'happiness, happiness; the greatest gift that I posess...'

Cereal · 08/09/2011 01:35

Anyone still sing nursery rhymes? They're all there for the passing-down-the-generations!

InWithTheITCrowd · 08/09/2011 06:46

When my sister was a baby, i used to sing guns n roses' "my michelle" to her, and substitute her name. I was only about 16 and i never really thought about the lyrics at the time, but..."your daddy watches porno, now your mama's not around. She used to like her heroin, but now she's underground" on reflection, possibly not the best choice. She is repaying me now- i caught her gently singing eminem to ds the other night.

I've been singing "I like big butts and I cannot lie" circa Shrek Blush

Occasioned by a glance at the mirrored wardrobe doors as I lent over his cot. Sad

Some DIL will thank me some day Grin

Russ Abott 'Atmosphere' was the first single I ever bought - 25p in the bargain basket at woolies!

posterofawolef · 08/09/2011 11:15

I love Wiggle Baby! DD will be getting that one later. Grin

Katiepoes · 08/09/2011 11:22

We have the odd bout of "shake shake shake ooh shake shake shake ooh shake your booty" complete with dance moves. My 15 month old falls around the ppalce and now joins in. She seems to like katy Perry too but I have my limits.

Katiepoes · 08/09/2011 11:23

ppalce? Place. Pah.

knittynoodle · 08/09/2011 11:29

My DS was particularly keen on the Steptoe & Son theme tune sang to him with hugely theatrical 'Bom Bom Bom Ba-Bom's.

It might have been the first thing he laughed at, actually. Grin

CurrySpice · 08/09/2011 12:01

We still occasionally sing the "She's got a Vessie, on her Chessie" song which I made up when my now 11 yo DD was a baby

(It means a Vest on her Chest btw)

Matronalia · 08/09/2011 13:57

DS likes , but only sung with a strong cockney accent (not my natural accent at all). I find myself dropping my aitches all over the place if it has been a bad night and I have to sing it a lot.

Some nights nothing but the refrain from 'No Limit' by 2Unlimited will do.

kneedeepinthedirtylaundry · 08/09/2011 13:58

Has anyone told social services about OP yet?

ledkr · 08/09/2011 14:02

we sing Tom Jones Delilah to her cos that is her name Grin
In the car if she cries she will always settle to a bit of funky house,no other music will do.

betterwhenthesunshines · 08/09/2011 14:10

I used to sing "In the bleak mid-winter" It seemed pretty apt after a cold midnight feed. Also lovely gentle tune that still sends my 6yr old to sleep!

Except she now also likes Black Eyed Peas... some choice lyrics there!

Katiepoes · 08/09/2011 14:13

Black Eyed Peas? Call social services immediately, no child should be exposed to that horror. It start there, next it'll be James Blunt and ebfore you know she'll be a hardcore Celine Dion fan. Slippery slope man.
