seem to want to check out your shopping trolley as fast as they possibly can (like there is an unspoken race with their colleagues) and leave the conveyer belt on so that all your food just keeps piling up.

It really gets my goat!

Most checkout staff IMO are friendly and polite. There are always the odd one or two though that do not say thank you or throw carrier bags about! Hmm

mumblechum - I don't regard working fast and not "chatting" as rude either. However, that's a bit different than someone who is deliberately being silent, doing the big sighs, doesn't even say hello or ask any of the standard questions (re bags, vouchers, nectar/tesco card, or even voice the total to pay). That's just being a sulky child, and it's unprofessional. There's one employee at our local supermarket that repeatedly acts like this (with every customer), and I have mentioned it to customer service previously. I generally avoid her till as I don't feel the need to deal with someone who wants to act like a sulky teenager.
