So, i'm about to book in with my midwife and i have to fill in the form detailing previous pregnancies etc. No problem there, done it before with previous children.

However, it's changed.

They now want to know quite intrusieve things, IMO - my NI number, if i'm on benifits are just a couple of examples... Why? Why would they need this info?

I've nowt to hide, but really, it all seems a bit 'big brother' for my liking.

Leave those bits blank.

grovel · 05/04/2011 18:34

Divided on this. Hate government questions but at the same time I want "joined up" government.

PenguinArmy · 05/04/2011 18:36

If you're on benefits you are entitled to some extra stuff.

Don't know about the NI

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 05/04/2011 18:38

If I don't like questions I ask why they want to know. If I think there reason is sensible I give the info, if not I don't.

doormat · 05/04/2011 18:42

its all down to the childrens act and every child matters framework as it is more multi agency nowadays

catinthehat2 · 05/04/2011 18:44

don't answer what you do not consider necessary for the health of your unborn child.

each one of these questions is keeping some jobsworth in a cushy little number keying in your responses into a database for uses which simply have NO benefit to you

Just say fuck off NO

FabbyChic · 05/04/2011 18:44

They need the NI number if you are on benefits, everything is done via NI number.

Vallhala · 05/04/2011 18:54

But Fabby, the midwife does not provide benefits and neither does the maternity unit or GP so why is this necessary? I'm with catinthehat.

slartybartfast · 05/04/2011 18:56

some penpusers statisticians-- somewhere.

you are lucky they dont ask your sexual orientation, whether you are a home owner etc.,

stoatie · 05/04/2011 18:57

You don't have to answer anything and MW should explain that to you. My understanding (in addition with what has already been said), is not only to link up services, ensure you have all benefits etc BUT ALSO, after birth notes are filed away and info is used anonymously for national statistics use etc - ie bits about highest educational status etc, bit like the census really.

www.perinatal.nhs.uk/birthnotes/pages/index.htm

Section at top describes information sharing

stoatie · 05/04/2011 19:00

ignore that link posted for wrong bit

GloriaSmut · 05/04/2011 19:00

Why not turn this round and try and look for the positives? If you were on "benifits" you might well be entitled to extra dosh - and what's not to like about that? Also, if you are using the NHS you need to accept that some sort of proof of entitlement might be sought.

catinthehat2 · 05/04/2011 19:06

thanks Stoatie.

there are some amazingly slippery bits of writing out there to persuade peopole to cough up information they have no need to impart. I think that link is a mighty fine example

I'm still going with :
"each one of these questions is keeping some jobsworth in a cushy little number keying in your responses into a database for uses which simply have NO benefit to you"

LoveBeingKnockedUp · 05/04/2011 19:30

Also some extra services you might be offered that only go to targetted familes.

oldraver · 05/04/2011 21:48

We have recently had a form from school wanting to know who lived in our household and all their NI numbers Shock

catinthehat2 · 05/04/2011 21:55

whaaaaaaaaat!!! honestly??
and did people go 'baa' and fill it in?
not on.

shakey1500 · 05/04/2011 21:57

I was in hospital last year and was also asked some weird and wonderful questions including NI number, was I on benefits and bizarrely, how many bedrooms there were in my house Shock

catinthehat2 · 05/04/2011 22:12

"each one of these questions is keeping some jobsworth in a cushy little number keying in your responses into a database for uses which simply have NO benefit to you"

sounds as if they are trying to match stuff on different databases . unlikely to be an obnjective relating to your personal health at that time. I would have asked them to pass to a relevant medical q or madeup some cobbler-tastic reply

Birdsgottafly · 05/04/2011 22:31

As well as targeting services, there is a data base kept that makes sure that every pregnant woman (after so many weeks pregnant) has been registered somewhere as having given birth. Some of the laws changed after Fred West's pregnant daughter was found to be one of his victims. It was thought as being very wrong that a pregnant woman could go missing without any questions being asked.

As well as Every Child Matters there have been new laws to do with the murder of a women whilst pregnant (distruction of unborn child).

You may know that your child is not in any danger but that is not the situation in every case. Children even in this country are sold, murdered (snuff films) and exploited. Why should the adults have absolute ownership of a child. It is entitled to be kept safe.

deemented · 05/04/2011 22:54

There's a seperate form for child protection.

I've filled out what i want to, and left what i didn't blank. Still not happy about disclosing so much to them tbh.
