to cook with horse carrots

I mean, they are, just, carrots aren't they? maybe not as pretty and shapely and maybe in need of an extra scrub, but surely a carrot is a carrot? Surely horse carrots are just the ones the supermarkets reject for inexplicable reasons and that the farmers throw in a sack and brand as horse carrots in order to sell them for at least something, rather than chuck them away.

Why not? They're just carrots and I assume you're going to wash them.

I did not realise you could buy horse carrots!!

I buy bags of economy carrots in the supermarket and dd takes the most bruised / twisted / manky ones to the stables.

Horse carrots? Surely just normal carrots, non?

JaxTellersOldLady · 05/04/2011 16:57

I have often wondered when passing the local market what the difference between the carrots were - apart from price... £2.50 for a sack of horse carrots or £££ for normal carrots.

usualsuspect · 05/04/2011 16:57

I've never heard of horse carrots

Parmallama · 05/04/2011 16:57

In these days of austerity we have to be resourceful!

TurkeyBurgerThing · 05/04/2011 16:57

I've bitten into a horse carrot many a time in my life! Never done me any harm.

Hk13 · 05/04/2011 16:58

They're just normal carrots, I used to eat them all the time and I've not turned into a horse yet :)

ProfYaffle · 05/04/2011 16:59

I've often wondered about horse carrots too. Was always vaguely worried something catastrophic had happened to them in the production process.

stealthsquiggle · 05/04/2011 17:04

I have always thought that - same for apples (DH eyes up boxes of horse apples with a view to cider-making, but has never had time to follow through)

The only thing stopping me is that we wouldn't eat a sack full of carrots before they went off - and even though we would still get good value out of the sack, that would annoy me.

hatwoman · 05/04/2011 17:06

ok. not sure if this counts as aibu by stealth. what if you had the job of producing a job lot of soup for a fundraising event? logical cost cutting or deplorable deception?

Isn't it all to do with stupid eu directives? Something along the lines of produce has to fit in with certain parameters? labelling produce as' horse carrots our apples' allows them to be sold rather than thrown away or used for ready meals etc.
Afaik the produce is exactly the same as the stuff sold in the supermarkets (probably grown in the same damn field) but is too big/ wonky/unpleasing to the eye to be sold in the shops.
It's madness!

hatwoman · 05/04/2011 17:23

they're incredibly cheap. about £2.50 for a sack at our Spar

Carrots is carrots! They all get washed and cooked, and they've all been, at some point in their life cycle, completely covered in soil! Cheers for the good idea, by the way, I'll see if I can find any round my way!

suzikettles · 05/04/2011 19:17

Definitely logical cost cutting. I wouldn't call it horse carrot soup though.

Maybe mutter something about grade II mishapes or something if someone queries your bargainous soup.

pointydog · 05/04/2011 19:25

So you can buy a bag of carrots called 'Horse Carrots'?

bigTillyMint · 05/04/2011 19:27

They don't sell horse carrots where I live in London, but surely a carrot's a carrot, isn't it?

stealthsquiggle · 05/04/2011 19:36

LOL at "horse carrot soup"

pointydog · 05/04/2011 19:39

Do they only sell horse carrots in teh Home Counties?

Vallhala · 05/04/2011 19:42

A carrot is a carrot is a carrot. A bit of Horse Carrot soup will not make the consumer snort, humpf, neigh or win the Grand National.

I say go for it.

hpsaucy · 05/04/2011 19:45

I'm in Essex and our local farm shop sells bags of horse carrots

jade80 · 05/04/2011 19:45

PMSL at pointydog. No, I assure you they are available elsewhere too!

Carrots are carrots... they are no different, just shapes or sizes that the supermarkets reject. Often some amusing shapes to be found!

CyberwebCinders · 05/04/2011 19:46

unless the horse has licked said carrot

CleanHankie · 05/04/2011 19:48

Our local farm shop has some animals outside that the children can pet and feed. If the shop assistants spot the kids clutching their bags of carrots ready to feed the pony/donkeys/goats etc you don't have to pay.

So technically "horse carrots" in Sussex are free!

They all come from the same box/tray that we buy our normal carrots from, so whats the difference? YANBU

hatwoman · 05/04/2011 20:55

never used to get them when I lived in SW London. all over the place up here in the rural wilds of the north midlands
