just flicking through a few catalogues and have noticed all the children are perfect rosy cheeked kids.my neighbour has a little boy with downs syndrome and i always thought he'd be great for this sort of thing, hes got a fab temperment, always smiling etc.
but why do we never see disability of any sort in these catalogues?

AIBU in emailing to enquire why?

Same reason as we don't have very fat / spotty/ cross eyed models. There's a cultural ideal of what is good looking, and models of all ages conform to this.
People wih disabilities don't conform to he ideal.
Not saying it's right, just pretty obvious why.

I am not excusing it, but I think that some people would assume that the items were in some way special things for the disability in question e.g. for toys. But the best way to change such perceptions would be to challenge them.

Maybe if they did use disabled models, attention would be drawn to the disability more than it would the product?

I'm not saying it's right, it's just a suggestion, but I think I would notice and think 'Oh, how fantastic, they have used a child with downs!' and then forget completely about the thing they are trying to sell.
