to be proud of some teenagers that I don't even know?

Last friday, a fourteen year-old girl was stabbed on he way to school by her ex-boyfriend. Luckily, she is making a good recovery and is back home despite being stabbed numerous times in the face and chest.

This is in no small part due to two of her school friends jumping in and helping. One boy rugby tackled her attacker to the ground, thus preventing him from inflicting more injury to her (he was in the middle of a frenzied attack, so the other boy was able to floor him without being noticed) and another school friend administered first aid to the wounded girl.

This all happened around the corner from me and everyone is in shock. But reading the newspaper this morning, it seems that we have two young people to be extremely proud of. If I was a parent of either of these two, my heart would be bursting with pride.

Story here

Good to hear of teenagers being in the news for being so courageous instead of being vilified. AIBU to have cried a bit this morning because I feel so proud that we have such lovely young people here?

yanbu!!

its good to hear

i have teen girls, also 3 young boys who will be teens soon enough!

YANBU. What an awful thing to have happened. I hope the young girl makes a full recovery.

I think it's fantastic what her friends did, risking their own lives to save her. I bet their parents are extremely proud.

I think teenagers often get a bad rap, yes there are some awful ones but I have to say all the teens I know are lovely young people.

She has been discharged from hospital and her parents have said that the hospital have done a fantastic job closing her wounds etc.

Can't imagine the horror of getting a phonecall to say your child has been injured like this. I hope they're all getting counselling :(

YANBU -Brave boy.

Hope the boy that attacked gets the help he needs and is not just released back into society after serving a length of time.

marmaladetwatkins · 04/04/2011 10:05

Well, he is eighteen and he has been charged with attempted murder so I think he will be facing a lengthy stretch in clinky. But yes, help needed.

yanbu- actually brought a tear to my eye reading that. Being a parent of a teenager the same age as the stabbed girl, i know how much flak they get.
How brave and selfless of them. they deserve some kind of recognition for thier bravery.

It's so nice to read something like that - teenage boys get such criticism it's good to read a positive story for once. Very brave of him especially as he didn't really know her (on the premise that it's easier to help a friend rather than a stranger).

marmaladetwatkins · 04/04/2011 12:37

Totally agree, springbok. I've heard reports that most of the pupils in the area were complicit in helping the injured girl, by sitting on him until police arrived/calling for ambulances etc. Teenagers like this give me hope for the future.

That is nice to read. I know adults who wouldn't have rugby tackled him like that. Good on them Smile

manfromCUK · 04/04/2011 13:36

YANBU - we only hear the bad stuff about teenagers despite the fact that 99% are brilliant (much better than I was too!).

dontcallmepeanut · 04/04/2011 16:32

YANBU. I'm proud of him too... And I don't even know the kid.

Desperateforthinnerthighs · 04/04/2011 16:43

YANBU - it's good to hear stuff like this.

Every Sunday when me and DH go to play badminton we go past a group of army cadets..........I feel proud of them and I dont know them, it's just so nice to see them spending their time on something like that - gives new hope for the future :)

This is very near me too, such a shock sat at work when word started going around, some members of staff have kids that attend the school

I have been on the verge of tears too reading about it

My daughter is the same age as the girl involved, one of my old school friends that doesn't live in the area had seen the news and not knowing the name of the school my daughter attends was texting me to ask about it
