Had mine fitted 2 months after having my daughter. Never gave birth or dilated (c-sec) so cervix was "honeymoon fresh" (nurse's words) ...
Speculum, like a smear. Lots of fiddling about. I think they did some kind of local anaesthetic, which felt cold and weird and, well a bit yuck. I had a doctor and a nurse, both female.
They didn't show it to me but I didn't ask.
The low point was that they had to put a "clamp" on my cervix to keep it in place as the bastid things can wave about apparently (great!)
That felt awful - initially, bite-on-your-hand-and-pant horrible, within 2 seconds, a knawing pain but bearable, but feel-sorry-for-yourself-yuck.
They put something up through into your uterus to "measure" your uterus. To make sure it fits? To cause you extra pain? God knows but I felt it as it hit the side of my uterus, and winced. They withdrew that.
She then put the Mirena in. At this point we were talking about the Hush Autumn/Winter range and their colourways...so it was over before I knew it
I was then done. I was asked to sit in the waiting room for 15 minutes or so so they could check I was okay and make sure I didn't pass out as I was driving myself (and my newborn!) home.
Got home fine. Was pouring my second glass of Shiraz when the doctor actually rang me to make sure I got home okay and that I was fine.
Bled a bit after - not initially, for at least 2 weeks I didn't, then I spotted for about a month, then sporadic spotting (and never more than spotting) for a while, then this settled to 2 days of spotting once a month. As periods go, that is pretty good.
Hormonally I'm not so sure, but I cannot honestly tell you whether its the coil or not that is causing my mood swing craziness (which I never had before) or if its actually my children - I have 2 kids 2 years apart who are both at a difficult age. I really can't see the wood for the trees but think its probably fine if I didn't have these extra things to deal with.
Good luck. Let us know how you go x
