to not understand why women bother with periods?

When you can take the pill straight through and skip it?

If you can't take the pill fair enough, both otherwise, why bother?

Because the pill pumps artificial hormones into the body so it's unnatural.

StuckinTheMiddlewithYou · 03/04/2011 11:42

Taking asprin is unnatural.

The times I took the pill without a break I used to swell up. My fingers were like sausages
So not worth it and periods are only light on pill anyway. I cant take pill now but have had really awful periods and was on duphaston which made me depressed for the days I had to take it
So there is no way I would have a mirena coil

I'm with SoH and Alouise on this...

I understand that the bleed you get after a Pill pack is a 'withdrawal bleed' - if you're pregnant, do you still bleed? I assumed women have a break, bleed, so know they're not pg.

StuckinTheMiddlewithYou · 03/04/2011 11:46

I know many women can't take the pill as it reacts badly with them, however if you have no nasty side affects, I'm at a loss why you'd go through all the hassle of a period.

Periods are not really natural - not in the number that most of us have them. Our body evolved for an ovulation/pg/bf/couple of ovulations/pg/bf...repeat until death cycle, not the period/period/period/period cycle for years on end that you get with non-hormonal contraception.
Now obviously the modern way has many huge advantages, but fewer and later pgs increases breast cancer risk, and constant ovulation increases ovarian and uterine cancer risk. (this is my recollection of my reading, am prepared to be corrected by experts).

ShowOfHands · 03/04/2011 11:47

That's hardly a reasoned argument is it? 'Taking aspirin is unnatural'. So? It's a spectrum. You sound like my mother and her 'eat all of your pie, there are people starving in Africa'. Well yes, but that doesn't make me hungry it makes me sad.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 03/04/2011 11:47

I have no problem with unnatural - painkillers are lovely. I just want to see a benefit to the 'unnatural' if you see what I mean. For me, taking the pill every day doesn't have a benefit.

ShowOfHands · 03/04/2011 11:49

Depends if you think it's a hassle. Stick mooncup in, get on with it for me.

If you have abnormal periods then by all means seek a resolution, same as you would if you had a headache and bought an aspirin, but why pump my body full of artificial hormones when I don't want to?

SOH I tried what you suggest but found I just got light "breakthru" bleeding unpredictably, so I figured I'd rather just have a 4 day fake period which at least was predictable.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/04/2011 11:50

I stopped taking the pill because it turned me fom a mild-mannered person to someone who could happily kill a random passerby if he looked at me the wrong way.

Periods were a walk in the park frankly.

Notka · 03/04/2011 11:50

1/2 weeks before period my hormones are going crazy.
Always argument with my second half- as I always say something what I don't really want to say- my moods are changing- just horrible-I even don't like myself.Pain during first 2 days is unbelievable as well.
I want to find something/pills what will help me to keep my hormones "come" before period.
do you know any?

StuckinTheMiddlewithYou · 03/04/2011 11:50

The use of the term "unnatural" is not a reasoned argument.

Our "natural" state is wandering about on the Afican planes using stone tools to scavenge meat from the carcasses of animals.

It's a meaningless term in anything but the most extreme examples.

What 'hassle' is a period? For some people it's a lot of pain and heavy bleeding, but for me (and many others) it's not painful or heavy. It doesn't disrupt my life at all. Though I still haven't acquired the ability to rollerblade.

I am currently PG with DC3 and this is the last so I am looking into contraception which will mean I have no more periods. I do get why some people might not be happy with the hormones, but to me Im not that bothered. Personnally Id rather not have periods even though mine are never particularly heavy.

Im thinking of going back on the implant, but I am a little worried about becoming PG with ANY contraception I may choose.

stuck if you would rather carry on the pill without a break then you do that, but if other people would rather have periods then thats up to them. Each to their own. Though I am interested to know if there's any reason as to why we should have periods apart from to know we are not PG or we are TTCing just so I CAN weigh up my options before DC3 is born.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 03/04/2011 12:10

I dislike having periods, but when they eventually do come back (I'm pg), not sure what I will do. All kinds of hormonal contraceptive are verboten to me (due to migraine history).
I suppose I could consider a permanent solution such as a hysterectomy (as this will be my last dc) but not sure.
Going to hope that bfing will put it off for a long as possible (though not holding out much hope - periods returned at 9 weeks with DS, despite exbfing!!!)

thumbwitch · 03/04/2011 12:12

because lack of periods increases your risk of cervical cancer, apart from anything else. Prolonged use of the contraceptive pill or multiple pregnancies are both increased risk factors for that particular form of cancer.

I'd take the periods - although lots of those are an increased risk factor for breast cancer - but then so is taking the combined OC pill. Slightly different reason though.
