To think that taking daffodils from a road border for your mum on mothers day is really scummy?

Once again while out on Mother's day morning I've seen a car parked up at a roadside border with the people next to it cutting down the daffodils. Which in my opinion is stealing. One year I saw people outside the local hospice doing this!
These aren't wild flowers. Someone has paid to plant those bulbs to make the road look nice.
If you want cheap flowers for your mum for mother's day then plant your own bulbs the year before!
Surely people don't think this is acceptable behaviour?

I saw somebody stealing flowers from a grave a few weeks ago. DH 'had a word' and was told to go away and do something biologically impossible. Nice.

thumbwitch · 03/04/2011 11:48

That's way worse. Stealing flowers from a grave is so disrespectful as well as thieving. Ugh.

zukiecat - really?? We have a real problem round here with people picking bluebells - a species that is under serious pressure. If everyone just picks "a few", there won't be any left at all.

My mother once got into serious trouble for picking roadside daffodils. We were on our way to an Easter bonnet competition when she saw the verge covered in daffs... only a man who lived there came racing out of his house to tell her off. Fair cop.

We didn't win anyway but little sister and I did get our pictures in the local paper with the Mayor. Grin

howdidthishappenthen · 03/04/2011 13:19

My DH proposed doing this with DS for me(communal private garden rather than roadside, but still..). I put a stop to it pronto. Wtf is wrong with him?!

alistron1 · 03/04/2011 15:08

I have planted daffodils in the verges on my road (part of a community project) and they look lovely. They are coming to the end of their flowering now and I wouldn't mind if someone wanted to cut some before they die off.

In fact I am going to cut some for myself tomorrow!!! Is it stealing if I planted 'em?!!

I have let my kids pick daffs before (1 each) when they are there in abundance eg the local wood.

We don't pick bluebells as they are endangered here, daffodils are not.

I don't personally think that's bad. We certainly don't give them away as gifts!!

ashamedandconfused · 03/04/2011 16:57

my kids have always known they can only pick daisies and dandelions in parks etc

anything else is just plain wrong (unless its your own garden)

it makes me so sad when we go to the bluebell woods and see handfuls of flowers discarded on the car park

kids as young as 2 can understand that the flowers need to be left so they can grow more seeds for next year, or for birds and insects to eat etc

It really doesn't take much of a thought to realise that if everyone picked daffodils there would be none left

Quejica · 28/03/2014 17:47

Strange name Sorry. You don't sound sorry at all. You think stolen flowers help you remember your MIL? I am struggling to understand how?

Suefla62 · 28/03/2014 17:53

Did you have to post the same "poor me message" on every thread about daffodils?

StealthPolarBear · 28/03/2014 17:56

Why have you resurrected this thread to tell us this?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 28/03/2014 17:57

Trolling is getting odder and odder. Confused

drnoitall · 28/03/2014 19:33

Scummy? Really?
I think you need to look the meaning up.
It's a little odd, but "scummy". No.

Hoppinggreen · 28/03/2014 20:17

When I moved in 12 years ago I panted daffodil bulbs on the grass verge outside my house and every year some fucker picks them!!
If I see them I will be doing more than taking photos !! ( I won't I'm a wimp)
The few they are left usually get flattened by next doors dog

Hoppinggreen · 28/03/2014 20:17

Planted !

HermioneWeasley · 28/03/2014 20:51

It is so selfish and scummy. Honestly, I'd cut their hands off.

SaucyJack · 28/03/2014 21:00

Somebody wants attention.

chattychattyboomba · 28/03/2014 22:41

Zombie thread!

wowfudge · 29/03/2014 07:48

Indeed - a zombie thread. Of all the flowers you can buy, daffs are some of the cheapest. You can buy a bunch for a pound. Better to do that in your mother's memory than steal. Taking flowers from verges is low.
