The first nice day of the year and neighbours have lit a massive bonfire

i had all the washing out on the line, kids playing happily, the smoke is too much to stay in the garden. Think stinging eyes level and have had to shut all windows and doors.

AIBU to think that having a bonfire when you live in very close proximity to your neighbours is selfish, particularly when the local council do a regular garden waste collection?

Am really pissed off.

Our fire has a lid on it as it is an incinerator thing - not much difference than a bbq really.

actually I think it's the 'washers' that are being unreasonable as they can dry their washing inside - the bbqers haven't got the option of having it indoors [ grin]

Underachieving · 02/04/2011 16:20

Yes I have. Problem, is there?

elmofan · 02/04/2011 16:23

You should move over here to live (Ireland) where it is illegal to burn any waste in your gardens Grin

Stop being a nob, you'll be offering to meet me outside next.....

valiumredhead · 02/04/2011 16:38

How on earth has a thread with only 30 odd posts gone tits up about bbqs and washing?! Only on mumsnet Grin

Grin Valium

OP, I totally understand how you're feeling.

I don't know where you are but it's a lovely sunny day in Manchester too.

There's always someone on the street who will take the opportunity to start a fire once the sun comes out. There's really no need for it. M'cr City Council are really good at taking waste away and they're really against garden bonfires and will serve a Nuisance Abatement Notice against anyone caught doing it. It might be worth speaking to your local council.

My neighbours are annoying, they burn stuff that shouldn't be burnt - usually some old piece of painted furniture that results in thick black (toxic?) smoke so no one can be outside. Thanks.

Serial BBQers in my alley are annoying too because they have daily bbqs with lots of friends round & the booze comes out. Me & DP are a very quiet household & we'd like to (sometimes) just sit outside & enjoy the evening sun without tinny radios, the fug of grease & noise. Every 4-5 BBQ, things often take a nasty turn after a few WKDs too many & we're treated to a catfight.

Basically - I can't wait to move out of the city & to a quiet country house!

FabbyChic · 02/04/2011 17:35

I thought you wasn't allowed to have a bonfire until after 7pm? Isn't it a bylaw?

RunAwayWife · 02/04/2011 17:42

The idiot next door but one to me is always having bonfires I think he is running a crematorium in his garden Hmm also they have a stupid dog that never stops yapping and he parks over my drive.
I feel your pain

valiumredhead · 02/04/2011 17:51

Fabby

From our council website

"It is a common misconception that there are specific byelaws that prohibit garden bonfires or specify times they can be lit - there aren't. If only dry garden waste is burnt the occasional bonfire should not cause a major problem"

Butterbur · 02/04/2011 17:55

YANBU. I have two neighbours who between them use most sunny days to burn garden rubbish. I have had to keep all the doors and windows shut on the hottest of days, while I wait for a pall of smoke to dissipate. Sometimes it takes hours.

Inconsiderate bastards. They should compost it. They've both got gardens bigger than me enormous gardens.

berylmuspratt · 02/04/2011 23:04

Our neighbours have had builders in for 5 long months, they started cutting up stone in the garden yesterday, when I had some washing out. Dust everywhere.

So I went and brought it back in and flicked the Vs when they weren't looking in a passive aggressive manner, made me feel a bit better :o
