Is a baby ultrasound scan disgusting? One shopping centre thinks so.

A friend of mine is trying to get a commercial run on a big screen at a well known shopping centre. It shows a live baby scan and is designed to highlight how the baby ultrasound scanner was created in the UK and how it's one of many inventions that have changed and saved lives. The idea is both brilliant and lovely and very sensitively done. It will also help benefit charities researching into pre birth conditions. So much would come from this.
This well know shopping centre is obviously 'more into money than mummies' and have refused to run the ad , they think a baby scan is disgusting. But are happy to take the ad dollar and run ads showing stick women, retouched images and the rest - you get the drift. Hypocritical?
All my friends now have boycotted the place.

If the ad is about prolife then yes it is inappropriate for shopping mall. If not and even though the cause may well be good it would be too in your face and upsetting for certain people. Two of my scans I was told there was no heartbeat, to see someone getting a scan whilst I was out shopping I think I would of literally broke down crying on a heap on the floor. Also as others have pointed out those having trouble conceiving. Its such a senstive subject that it is not really appropriate

WidowWadman · 02/04/2011 15:50

Love the intra-uterine potato! (And am quite relieved that I'm not the only one who wasn't really overwhelmed with emotions at her scans)

Underachieving · 02/04/2011 15:53

"you were told that it is disgusting to use ultrasound pictures to emotionally blackmail women was 'disgusting' because it is IS morally disgusting"

I'll go one step broader LaWeasel. I'm going to say that all and any use of emotional blackmail, manipulation, or dishonesty is disgusting. I would go so far as to say it is abhorant if deployed against the already vulnerable.

Bucharest - I think we need a photo of your DC(s) to check that you didn't actually give birth to a potato.

WassaAxolotl · 02/04/2011 18:07

And this is how the pro-life movement undermines itself/is undermined by its members.

By demonstrating that the emotional pain and misery of adult women mean nothing to them. Such utter lack of empathy or thought for the people they can hurt with such campaigns.

Goodynuff · 02/04/2011 21:44

I wish the OP would come back and deal with the questions put to her.Hmm She was more than willing to dish it out when she thought everyone was going to agree....

Underachieving · 02/04/2011 22:29

Oh but goodynuff you don't understand, everyone secretly does agree with her, they just aren't saying so. She can tell, through her special powers.

Goodynuff · 02/04/2011 23:00

oh, that is what she is on Wink special powers Grin

Underachieving · 02/04/2011 23:13

And she's on those special powers morning noon and night if her logicality is anything to go by. Sprinkled on cornflakes I shouldn't wonder!

thumbwitch · 02/04/2011 23:30

I thought she implied that we were all coldhearted bitches for not immediately agreeing with everything she said on such limited info - did I read that wrong then? Or perhaps she was using her special mind powers to try and "turn" us all so we would go "of course KatieKool you are right all hail to the power of Kool" in monotonous chorus.

(God I hate the use of Kool instead of Cool!)

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/04/2011 23:36

OP types streams of consciousness crap like she has just smoked a fat doobie.

Agree definitely a pro life campaign.

Goodynuff · 02/04/2011 23:46

maybe we need a 'come back katey' thread, where she can enlighten us all Grin

thumbwitch · 02/04/2011 23:48

nah, she knows she's been rumbled, that's why she's not been back.
So much for openness, transparency and honesty, hey! Grin

Underachieving · 03/04/2011 00:06

Just to annoy you even more thumbwitch, it's also "Katey" rather than a proper spelling like Katy or Katie. She is indeed so identifiable, with her obvious username, that I have managed to look up her home address/ national insurance number/ voting record and now know the name of her cat and where she buys her bras... "Underachieving" however is the height of all stealth. Let MI6 top that!

thumbwitch · 03/04/2011 01:29
  • and where does she buy them, underachieving? I wouldn't have thought she wore one, tbh!
AuntiePickleBottom · 03/04/2011 08:59

when i go to the shops, i ant to shop.
no i haven't had an accident in the last 3 years, no i don't want a catalogue, i already have sky, i cba to change my internet suppler ect.

but i would really hate to see this ad, there are so many women who have had mmc or fertity issues or even women who have had an abortion.

AuntiePickleBottom · 03/04/2011 09:01

(sorry hit post to soon)and this could have a huge impact on there mental heath

JazzAnnNonMouse · 03/04/2011 12:35

I'm quite confused as to the point of the ad?
Presuming it's some kind of pro life ad that the OP is being VERY cagey about...
Weird to say you want transparency and then have no transparency...

I remember once on blue peter when one of the presenters was up duffed they did a live scan of her insides.

Summerbird73 · 03/04/2011 13:59

i have just had a MC - and my therapy of choice was shopping. i would have flipped out if i had seen a live scan in a shopping centre. god how insensitive.

and frankly even before my MC i found other peoples scans boring - hell even DS's was a bit odd. Not as interesting as bucharest tho. Grin

and yes - the OP is decidedly odd - think we all sussed her out right away - it was her ramblings about 'invisible posters who actually agree with her' that made me smile!
