to really want to report next door to environmental health

because their dog yaps all the bloody time. Now the weather is a bit better they seem to let it out at about 7 each morning and it runs in and out all day yapping at nothing.

They never seem to try to stop it. I know dogs do bark at things but it's just constant.

do environmental health deal with dogs barking?

How do you propose they should stop their dog barking?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 01/04/2011 17:02

Have you spoken to them about it? If so, and nothing has changed, then YWNBU to go to Environmental Health.

GypsyMoth · 01/04/2011 17:03

they will tell you to keep a diary....then you will get the 'listening' equipment in.........then you will be told its not loud enough/long enough/fobbed off.........

been there,i feeeeeel you pain!!

pingu2209 · 01/04/2011 17:03

Surely you would report them to RSPCA?

Littlefish · 01/04/2011 17:07

Have you spoken to your neighbours about it? They may not realise that it is a nuisance to other people.

GypsyMoth · 01/04/2011 17:09

yes, speak to them......our neighbours dogs only bark when they leave the house

rspca do nothing......dog warden is good, and is the house council/HA/private rental??

DontGoCurly · 01/04/2011 17:19

YANBU

I can't fathom what goes through the minds of people who neglect dogs alone in a garden all day while they bark ruining the peace of everyone in the neighbourhood. Probably tumbleweed !!!

Report them if that doesn't work poison......................................................................................................................................................................................................................the stupid owners!!! Wink

Choufleur · 01/04/2011 17:42

I've mentioned that their dog barks a lot to them. Not actually said how bloody annoying it is though. The women is home a lot so the dog is not actually left that much. It barks when she is there.

you will need to act now then, before the 'cuts' mean there is no services left to assist you!

ohnoudidnt · 01/04/2011 18:04

yanbu. I hate dogs that bark all day,or i should say i hate their owners who cant be bothered to take them out.Dont actually see the point in dogs unless they are in the police force or helping the blind etc as they just smell, make a mess and never stop barking.....whats the point!

Birdsgottafly · 01/04/2011 19:12

She may have to rehome the dog so be prepared for the fallout. If she is in then there is no excuse. I took in a rescue dog who turned out to have separation anxiety. She could not be left at all, if she was she yapped. My next door neighbour reported it because she doesn't like me (we live in an area of barking dogs). She was rarely left but strict HA rules. I will be honest i never thought that you could report day time noise to the extent that you can. If it is literaly all day then yanbu, but my point was that other than that no other noise day or night came from my house. We all do things that others could find fault with.

Vallhala · 01/04/2011 19:32

Pingu, contrary to common mistake the RSPCA will not deal with dog barking problems. These are, as the OP indicates, a matter for the local council's Environmental Health department - barking is a noise nuisance and not considered a welfare issue.

Birdsgottafly sums it up very well and IMHO situations like this should be referred to the council as a very last resort as the fallout can be spectacularly unpleasant, resulting in anything from revenge action, rows in the street and general unpleasant relationships with more than the neighbour concerned to, ultimately, the householder losing their home or the dog being taken to the pound and losing his life.

A calm approach to a neighbour or someone who can act as a go-between is far preferable to any of the above.

Out of interest, Choufleur, do you like dogs? (No veiled accusation intended).

Choufleur · 01/04/2011 19:38

Yes i like dogs. We have one. And before everyone jumps in that he must make noise he does a bit but he rarely barks. We've only had him since end of Jan but I've asked neighbours to both sides and the back if he is noisy when left and the only time they say he barks is when someone comes to the house (post lady etc).

What really annoys me is hat she is there and does nothing. If she was out and genuinely didn't realise I wouldn't mind quite so much.

My sisters dog barks/yaps whenever anyone walks in or past her house. I hate it and I love dogs and mine rarely barks. If i had to listen to a yapping dog all day I would report it too. Keep telling my sister to get it's vocal chords removed....shame thats not allowed.

FudgeGirl · 01/04/2011 19:49

Choufleur, we've got exactly the same problem with two neighbours. We've spoken pleasantly to both - on several occasions.

One side (two doors down) used to let their dog out as early as 6am and before and leave it outside while they went to the gym, it yapped constantly for an hour or more.

Then they'd leave it in the garden if the weather was nice on the weekend and it just barked, barked, barked constantly and ruined everyone's enjoyment of the garden - all the neighbours were complaining to each other about it except the owners of the dog!

We spoke to them, it stopped. When it started again, we went round again - we just said we weren't going to put up with being woken up every morning and not being able to enjoy our garden at weekends.

It's better now, they don't leave the dog outside and they take it for walks, which they weren't doing.

Then people moved in two doors the other side with a very large dog that barks so loudly and constantly you can hear it from inside their house - and we're not even attached to them!

Our immediate neighbour is elderly and was very distressed so we went to speak to them - again, politely. It's a lot better now.

Some people just don't realise how annoying it is - I've no problem with dogs barking, it's just when it's so constant it drives you mad. We have a dog who doesn't bark, luckily not even in reaction to the neighbours' barking dogs!

We did register a complaint with env health about the large dog when speaking to them didn't help the first time, but since my OH went to talk to them a second time it isn't a real problem any longer.

I know it sounds moany and we've been unlucky for it to happen twice, but why should you bite your tongue and put up with it? It's a bloody nuisance and really annoying.

Just speak to them, worst they can say is eff off, and if they do, go to env health.
