PTA ignoring my request

Today is the school disco. There are actually 2 discos - one for infants between 5.30 - 6.30 and one for juniors between 6.45 - 7.45.

As part of the PTA I said I would help sell tickets during the week before (which I did and sold over £50 worth). Also I said I would help set up after school (which I did).

However, I said that during the disco I would not mind being on the lucky dip stall but did not want to be on the sweetie stall. Manning that stall is madness. The children mob you. I also said that as my children are in preschool and infants I didn't want to do both discos, only the infants one.

I received an email today saying that 2 other mums had dropped out due to unforeseen circumstances and the job list had been changed. I am now down to man the sweetie stall at both the infants and juniors discos.

I will grit my teeth and man the sweetie stall even though I really don't want to but would it be unreasonable of me to just leave at the end of the infants disco and say 'byeeee' I need to put ds3 to bed now.

Not at all. But you're going to grit your teeth and get through it, aren't you? Grin

What about taking control. Making the kids line up, behave well, or you won't serve them? Maintain order. If you put on your best 'Don't Fuck With Me' voice Wink and demand a line or no sweets, you might be surprised.

It is an impossible task. They mass you in a swarm. Hideous. It is the same at the summer and Christmas fayres in the sweet tombola. I refuse to do that staff during the fayres either - put me on hoopla!

but they can't have anything until you take the money for it, right? so you have the power?

Do you want me to come down? I'll put the fear of god into the little blighters sort it out.

Have faith in yourself. You can get control.

You have a Mean Mum voice, I bet. (we all do) Use that.

pingu2209 · 01/04/2011 17:05

Yeh I have the mean mum voice. I also have 'the look'. Do you have the look?

So, what happens if everyone precious says they don't want to do the difficult stall?

HOwever, beforehand you simply need to tell them you can't do the junior disco.

hecate · 01/04/2011 17:11

Oh yes. The Look.

I can get "sorry, sorry, sorry" just by using The Look.

You have The Voice, you have The Look.

You're an unstoppable mum machine. Go. Bring order to sweetie chaos.

Doesn't happen to be the old school I worked at does it? The sweet stall there is horrific during discos - especially during the Junior slot where some of the kids bring like a tenner to spend on sweets.

MorticiaAddams · 01/04/2011 17:19

YABU just to leave at the end of the infants disco but it wouldn't be unreasonable to e-mail straight back and say that no you can't help at the juniors disco. You had already told them that so they'll just have to cope.

The sweet stall is manic but school discos in general are. Somebody has to do and if you only do the one disco then you'll get through it.

Reply to the email asap and say that you're sorry but that as per your initial offer (by email? In meeting? etc??) you were never going to be present at the second disco and you are still not going to be able to be able to. Also that you had asked to be doing anything but sweetie stall so please could they swap you as you already know that you can't do this.

Alternatively turn up and pretend you haven't seen the email and just go to the stall that you were going to be on and if anybody tries to send you to sweetie stall just stay where you are and say no, that you are fine where you are thank you very much and that the other person can swap instead. All done with a very sweet smile Grin

I'm back home from the disco. 3 hours of my evening gone. I stayed for the junior disco and then cleared up afterwards. I'm knackered. However, I wasn't on the sweeties stall which was second most popular after the glow sticks stall. I was behind the scenes filling up jugs of squash and making up packets of mixed sweets that we sell for 20p.

My 2 youngest children went home with another mum and I picked them up afterwards. But my eldest was thrilled to be mixing with the big children.

Big mug for doing it, but it is always the same people and there are about 4 parents who do everything. I felt I should help out.
