to expect to feel just a little bit thinner and a lot healthier?

I have given up alcohol (Shock) for lent.

Normally i'm a large glass of red Wine or two a night kind of girl. I love wine. It helps. a lot.

Anyway. I decided to ditch it for lent.

At what point should I expect to feel brighter in the mornings? To feel energised? For my skin to look smoother? For my brain to be clearer? For my memory to be better?

And Why the fucking hell have I not lost a single pound? I thought wine was full of 'empty calories' and beer made you bloaty?

Confused Confused Confused Angry

AIBU to be a little cross?

Don't ask me. I have no experience of giving up Wine Blush

jenster1976 · 31/03/2011 20:06

No, that would seriously irritate me, I have given up week time drinking (apart from tonight when I am celebrating DDs 1sr choice school!) for various reasons, hopeful unintended weight loss being one of them, not an ounce...but perhaps replacing wine with haribo is the problem?

AgentZigzag · 31/03/2011 20:09

You aren't being unreasonable, most definately not.

But then I'm sure being told you'll feel great when you cut out all your vices is just something those health conscious weirdos like to pedal to their own evil ends.

I'm impressed with your resolve though, keep it up and all that Grin

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 31/03/2011 20:09

I'm with you! I've been dieting and stopped drinking, lost half a stone in January, and since then not a lb!! Angry

fedupofnamechanging · 31/03/2011 20:14

I've been on a diet for approx 4 weeks, so have very sadly given up most of my vices. I have yet to see clearer skin and be full of energy.

I think you won't lose weight if your overall calorie intake is still the same. Have you replaced wine with snacks?

gordyslovesheep · 31/03/2011 20:16

Oh I would be very peeved - I would expect to loose something

mind you I have upped my gym classes to 3 a week - including a proper bastard weight class - 3 weeks in - am I a size smaller - am I my rather large white arse

so I feel your pissed off ness

grrrrr

pointydog · 31/03/2011 20:17

I don't think dropping a glass fo wine alone will make you lose weight any time soon.

pointydog · 31/03/2011 20:17

Did you feel fuzzy-headed and lethargic in the morning before you stopped?

phooey · 31/03/2011 20:22

I stopped for 2 weeks last month and after about ten days, my skin and eyes looked clearer and brighter, definitely. I also seemed to do more with my evenings.

The plus of a BFN is the Wine I will be doing the same this month!

hmc · 31/03/2011 20:23

Well you do have to eat well and exercise frequently (plus get appropriate sleep) to feel energised - in addition to cutting back alcohol

toddlerwrangler · 31/03/2011 20:29

Oh I SO feel your pain.

I have started the following regime:

Mon lunch: 45 mins pilates
Tues evening: 40 mins horse riding
Weds eve: 1hr pilates
Thurs eve: 2hrs Kung Fu.

I SHOULD (by law) be thin, beautiful with glowing skin. So why am I in the same spotty flabby shape I was when I rode once a fortnight and did just the Kung Fu?

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY [shakes fist]

AtYourCervix · 31/03/2011 20:33

i'm fuzzy headed and lethargic both mornings and evening. I'm too knackered (and my back to bloody hurty) to do any exercise, although my job is pretty active. I eat fairly decently. Don't eat takeaway more than twice a year. Don't eat crap (not more than once a week). Obviously take in more than 50 calories a day but not the 4 billion you'd think looking at me.

It's Not Fair Sad

Job with shite hours means it is impossible to do any proper exercise class regularly and I eat at silly times of the day.

I think everyone's bodies are unique and react differently. I have dieted like a fool before and felt rubbish, but since I started this paticular one (low carb) I feel fab.

AtYourCervix · 31/03/2011 20:55

but i don't want to keep denying myself nice stuff (Wine) and still be a blob.

Why? why? WHY?

Suspect you'll also pick up all the bugs that the alcohol was killing off - health kicks almost always make you ill!!!!

BaronessBomburst · 31/03/2011 23:08

Then I'll invite you to the Netherlands for this weekend. They have a Halfway-through-the-Fast party. The carnival floats, beer tents, and dodgy discos all come out again on Saturday and Sunday, celebrate that they're half-way through Lent, get rip-roaring drunk, and then go back to 'fasting' again on Monday. Mad, mad people, the Dutch.....

red wine is full of sugar - my alcho friend said that she has been having much stronger cravings for sugar since quitting, so is eating more chocolate and snacks. Could that be your problem?

Fernie3 · 01/04/2011 00:38

Yanbu, I don't drink alcohol but in am addicted to fizzy drinks I think ( diet ones luckily). I gave that up and went through days of headaches and felt no different not drinking it all. I thought I would feel healthier but no. So yanbu to be disappointed but at least do what I am and think of the money you will save!
